Titanium has become in recent years an interesting material in many applications that require a combination of high mechanical properties and low density. It has the peculiarity of undergoing an allotropic transformation at 882°C. Below this temperature, ...

The complex mechanics of porous and granular media play a significant role in various industrial processes and natural phenomena. As an example, understanding the mechanics of how failure occurs, localizes and propagates in porous brittle solids under vari ...

The membrane electrode assembly is the powerhouse of the anion exchange membrane water electrolyser (AEMWE), thereby placing a great importance on the associated preparation conditions. This paper investigated how annealing temperature and time impacted ac ...

Catastrophic failure in brittle, porous materials initiates when smaller-scale fractures localise along an emergent fault zone in a transition from stable crack growth to dynamic rupture. Due to the rapid nature of this critical transition, the precise mic ...

Limit-state analysis of soil-structure interacting systems is a classical problem in theoretical and applied soil mechanics. Usually, the capacities of both components are evaluated separately. However, it is well known that soil-structure interaction play ...

Across the seismogenic zone, the transition from brittle to plastic deformation corresponds to a semibrittle regime where brittle fracturing and plastic flow coexist at high strength conditions. Thorough experimental investigations on brittle-plastic trans ...

Dislocation motion through a random alloy is impeded by its interactions with the compositional fluctuations intrinsic to the alloy, leading to strengthening. A recent theory predicts the strengthening as a function of the solute-dislocation interaction en ...

Accurate modeling of the time-dependent behavior of geomaterials is of great importance in a number of engineering structures interacting with soft, highly compressible clay layers or with organic clays and peats. In this work, a uniaxial constitutive mode ...

The aim of the present thesis is to model numerically the dynamic failure behavior of concrete at the mesoscale. Concrete is the world's most widely used construction material and the structures made of it are subjected to dynamic loads during their long s ...

The increasing demand for housing in Colombia and several neighbouring countries, together with the large relative cost of the materials, has prompted city administrations to build thin reinforced concrete (RC) wall buildings with a single layer of reinfor ...

The performance of 11 different shear reinforcement systems against punching of inner slab-column connections under gravity loading was compared on the basis of experiments on 12 full-scale specimens, 8 of them newly reported. The slab geometry and flexura ...

Thin epitaxial films have a great potential to be used in real life applications, such as oxide-on-silicon. However, they often contain a large amount of defects, leading to an enhanced electrical conductivity. This could be desirable in some applications ...

An innovative higher-order beam theory, capable of accurately taking into account flexural–shear–torsional interaction, is originally combined with a force-based formulation to derive the corresponding finite element. The selected set of higher-order defor ...

Shear has been observed to be often the governing failure mode of RC cantilever deck slabs of bridges without shear reinforcement subjected to concentrated loads when tested under a quasi-static application of the load. However, concentrated loads of heavy ...

Microbial Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) is an innovative technique for soil grouting involving a bacterial reactive grout. A comprehensive research work is carried out to better understand and consequently describe the phenomenon of multispecies rea ...

The miniaturization trend in industry requires micro devices for handling and sensing in a micro environment. As the size of the handled objects decreases and their fragility increases, the demand for sensors with higher force sensitivity and resolution gr ...

Ultra High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concretes (UHPFRC) combine outstanding protective (extremely low permeability) and mechanical (high tensile strength and significant tensile strain hardening) properties. These materials can be used in composite UHPF ...
