Edward E. Hagenlocker and William G. Rado demonstrated Brillouin interaction in gas for the first time in 1965, right after the very first demonstrations of stimulated Brillouin scattering in solid materials. In their experiment, they used a megawatt pulse ...

A major challenge to the scalability of cryogenic computing platforms is the heat load associated with the growing number of electrical cable connections between the superconducting circuitry and the room-temperature environment. Compared with electrical c ...

Optical diffraction tomography is an effective tool to estimate the refractive indices of unknown objects. It proceeds by solving an ill-posed inverse problem for which the wave equation governs the scattering events. The solution has traditionally been de ...

Realistic modeling of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) of scene objects is a vital prerequisite for any type of physically based rendering. In the last decades, the availability of databases containing real-world material measurem ...

Optical waveguides are one of the most important photonic components. They are indispensable tools in many of todayâ s technologies because of their capacity of guiding light. In particular, compact, low loss, flexible polymer optical waveguides are cruci ...

A novel, to the best of our knowledge, postprocessing technique is proposed to extract with a flexible and variable spatial resolution the information from Brillouin optical time-domain analyzers, obtained using a pulse longer than the acoustic settling ti ...

Plasmonic nanojunctions, consisting of adjacent metal structures with nanometre gaps, can support localised plasmon resonances that boost light matter interactions and concentrate electromagnetic fields at the nanoscale. In this regime, the optical respons ...

Although distributed fiber-optic sensing of axial strain and temperature is a well-established technique, there are almost no demonstrations of distributed hydrostatic pressure sensing. The main obstacle for such measurements is the low sensitivity to pres ...

The integration of new materials mediating light-matter interaction in nanoscale devices is a persistent goal in nanophotonics. One of these materials is Gallium phosphide, which offers an attractive combination of a high refractive index (n=3.05 at a wave ...

We propose a bianisotropic hybrid metal-dielectric structure comprising dielectric and metallic cylindrical wedges wherein the composite metacylinder enables advanced control of electric, magnetic, and magnetoelectric resonances. We establish a theoretical ...

Moving towards an increased understanding of the dynamic processes in the edge of tokamak plasmas requires continuous innovation in diagnostic capabilities, pushing the envelope in both spatial and temporal dimenstions. Plasma density and rotation, and the ...

Harnessing ultrasensitivity from optical structures to detect tiny changes in the targeted samples is the main goal of scientists in the field of sensor design. In this study, an uncommon rhombus-shape plasmonic structure is proposed for providing blue-shi ...

The recently proposed concept of metamaterials has opened exciting venues to control wave-matter interactions in unprecedented ways. Here, we demonstrate the relevance of metamaterials for inducing acoustic birefringence, a phenomenon which has already fou ...

In this contribution, a complete dissertation concerning the behavior of a Long Period Grating (LPG) inscribed in a B-Ge co-doped optical fiber by means of an excimer laser and exposed to proton irradiation during a recent extensive campaign performed at t ...

We demonstrate the existence of a cross Feshbach resonance by strongly driving a lower polariton mode and by monitoring in time the transmission of a short optical pulse at the energy of the upper polariton mode in a semiconductor microcavity. From the sig ...
