This study investigates how changing sky conditions in window views influence visual perception in a virtual reality environment. Over two experimental sessions, participants viewed 10 distinct window scenes, each recorded as real-time videos under clear a ...

Volume electron microscopy is the method of choice for the in situ interrogation of cellular ultrastructure at the nanometer scale, and with the increase in large raw image datasets generated, improving computational strategies for image segmentation and s ...

Grid cells in the entorhinal cortex (EC) encode an individual’s location in space, integrating both environmental and multisensory bodily cues. Notably, body-derived signals are also primary signals for the sense of self. While studies have demonstrated th ...

Visual affordance segmentation identifies the surfaces of an object an agent can interact with. Common challenges for the identification of affordances are the variety of the geometry and physical properties of these surfaces as well as occlusions. In this ...

Does gravity affect decision-making? This question comes into sharp focus as plans for interplanetary human space missions solidify. In the framework of Bayesian brain theories, gravity encapsulates a strong prior, anchoring agents to a reference frame via ...

Visual estimates of stimulus features are systematically biased toward the features of previously encountered stimuli. Such serial dependencies have often been linked to how the brain maintains perceptual continuity. However, serial dependence has mostly b ...

Hand motor impairments are one of the main causes of disabilities worldwide. Rehabilitation procedures like mirror therapy are given crucial importance. In the traditional setup, the patient moves the healthy hand in front of a mirror; the view of the mirr ...

Physically based rendering methods can create photorealistic images by simulating the propagation and interaction of light in a virtual scene. Given a scene description including the shape of objects, participating media, material properties, etc., the sim ...

While there is a growing use of complex facade designs in contemporary architecture worldwide and across Europe, little is known about the perceptual effects of these facades and the resulting daylight patterns on occupants, or about how such effects might ...

Cybersickness still poses a significant challenge to the widespread usage of virtual reality, leading to different levels of dis- comfort and potentially breaking the immersive experience. Researchers have attempted to discover the possible fundamental cau ...

Object-centric learning has gained significant attention over the last years as it can serve as a powerful tool to analyze complex scenes as a composition of simpler entities. Well-established tasks in computer vision, such as object detection or instance ...

The perception of one’s own body is a complex mechanism that can be disturbed by conflicting sensory information and lead to illusory (mis-) perceptions. Prominent models of multisensory integration propose that sensory streams are integrated according to ...

Façades and light pattern composition have been shown to influence the spatial experience and physiological responses of humans [1,2]. The present study examines the effect of sunlight penetration and window size on fixations to the floor of the scene, and ...

Modern information technologies and human-centric communication systems employ advanced content representations for richer portrayals of the real world. The newly adopted imaging modalities offer additional information cues and permit the depiction of real ...

Virtual reality (VR) is immersive not only because of visual integration, but because we can act and perform in a virtual environment (VE). Beyond the mere fact that a VR system provides images computed directly from the users' viewpoint in stereoscopy, it ...

Most current software support the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) transfer of Building Information Models (BIMs) to applications enabling Virtual Reality (VR) navigation (BuildingSMART, 2020; Kiviniemi, Tarandi, Karlshøj, Bell, and Karud, 2008; Poljanšek ...

Physically based differentiable rendering algorithms propagate derivatives through realistic light transport simulations and have applications in diverse areas including inverse reconstruction and machine learning. Recent progress has led to unbiased metho ...

Human-centered scene understanding is the process of perceiving and analysing a dynamic scene observed through a network of sensors with emphasis on human-related activities. It includes the visual perception of human-related activities from either single ...

We propose a new method for climate-based daylight modeling (CBDM) based on simulating and evaluating only the most important features. By adaptively sampling the temporal lightfield that describes daylight in buildings, our method escapes the curse of dim ...

Understanding the external environment depends heavily on vision, audition, and touch. Like vision and audition, the human sense of touch is complex. Tactile perception is composed of multiple fundamental and physical experiences felt as changes in stiffne ...
