We introduce contextual stochastic bilevel optimization (CSBO) -- a stochastic bilevel optimization framework with the lower-level problem minimizing an expectation conditioned on some contextual information and the upper-level decision variable. This fram ...

It is natural for humans to judge the outcome of a decision under uncertainty as a percentage of an ex-post optimal performance. We propose a robust decision-making framework based on a relative performance index. It is shown that if the decision maker’s p ...

This paper studies the operation of multi-agent networks engaged in multi-task decision problems under the paradigm of simultaneous learning and adaptation. Two scenarios are considered:one in which a decision must be taken among multiple states of nature ...

Environmental impact objectives are commonly found in building performance labels and rating schemes. Anticipating a building’s impact from the conceptual design stage and identifying decisions that do not compromise its chances of reaching these targets i ...

We study stochastic bilevel programs where the leader chooses a binary here-and-now decision and the follower responds with a continuous wait-and-see-decision. Using modern decision rule approximations, we construct lower bounds on an optimistic version an ...

The drift diffusion model (Ratcliff, 1978) is widely used to model binary decision-making. In this model, evidence for the two alternatives is integrated over time until it hits a decision boundary leading to a reaction. The drift diffusion model fits many ...

Carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) is the gold standard for the assessment of aortic stiffness. It is calculated by the ratio of pulse transit time (PTT) between two arterial sites and the distance between them. The precision of PTT estimation de ...

An Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) using the low duty-cycle nature of pulse-based Ultra Wide-Band (UWB) communications to reduce its power consumption is proposed. Implemented in CMOS 180 nm technology, it can capture a 5 ns window at 4 GS/s each 100 ns, ...

We present simulations for a design of a high-energy single-stage mid-IR difference frequency generation adapted to a two-color Ti:sapphire amplifier system. The optimized mixing process is based on chirped pulse difference frequency generation (CP-DFG), a ...

While rule based control (RBC) is current practice in most building automation systems that issue discrete control signals, recent simulation studies suggest that advanced, optimization based control methods such as hybrid model predictive control (HMPC) c ...

Decisions about noisy stimuli require evidence integration over time. Traditionally, evidence integration and decision making are described as a one-stage process: a decision is made when evidence for the presence of a stimulus crosses a threshold. Here, w ...

Decision making is of crucial interest in many disciplines such as psychology, neuroscience, economics and machine learning. Binary perceptual decision theories relate to situations where an observer (or machine) is confronted with one of two possible nois ...

An epidemic spreading in a network calls for a decision on the part of the network members: They should decide whether to protect themselves or not. Their decision depends on the trade off between their perceived risk of being infected and the cost of bein ...

Formal research on Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology started in the U.S. in 2002; where its definition was formulated and the frequency allocation in that country established. However, the first ultra-wideband transmission was done during the confirmation of ...

Decision support systems for electronic catalogs assist users in making the right decision from a set of possible choices. Common examples of decision making include shopping, deciding where to go for holidays, or deciding your vote in an election. Current ...

Floods are not only due to fatality. It is the responsibility of the human being to protect himself from heavy damages due to natural elements, and he sometimes has the chance to profit from a given situation to influence events. One of these possibilities ...

This paper presents a new method for evaluating product designs at their early stage of development according to different criteria and a case-study-based project. The goal is to select among imprecisely defined design alternatives in a multicriteria conte ...

Speaker detection is an important component of a speech-based user interface. Audiovisual speaker detection, speech and speaker recognition or speech synthesis for example find multiple applications in human-computer interaction, multimedia content indexin ...
