Architecture is a prospective discipline. In other words, the practice of architecture traditionally explores design methods in which a particular solution is speculated upon, in order to answer a particular set of questions. These solutions tend to be org ...

Magnetically responsive soft materials are promising building blocks for the next generation of soft robotics, prosthesis, surgical tools, and smart textiles. To date, however, the fabrication of highly integrated magnetic fibers with extreme aspect ratios ...

In 1970 on the rugged coast of Costa Paradiso on the Italian island of Sardinia, the encounter between one of the most renowned Italian film directors, Michelangelo Antonioni, and an architect with an engineering vision, Dante Bini, produced a holiday vill ...

Nowadays, Liquid Composite Molding techniques are often used to manufacture high quality fiber reinforced composite parts at a relatively low cost. These involve an infiltration process, in which a liquid resin is forced to ingress into a dry fibrous porou ...

How can one construct spatial histories and architectural theories from gestures, words and voices, bodies and minor threads? This research delves into oral and embodied architectural and spatial knowledge as modes of producing buildings, spaces and spati ...

Capillarity plays a crucial role in many natural and engineered systems, ranging from nutrient delivery in plants to functional textiles for wear comfort or thermal heat pipes for heat dissipation. Unlike nano- or microfluidic systems with well-defined por ...

Concepts of type and typology are not specific to architecture. Rather they represent an interdisciplinary approach to ordering knowledge and gaining insight. In the field of architecture, the study of types and typology offers a didactic perspective that ...

In architectural historiography, it is widely accepted that in the aftermath of WWII, Modern Architecture found itself in the trouble of redefining its quest, its meaning, and its purpose; a crisis of the Modern before the Post-Modern. Thus, in this partic ...

The concept of New Brutalism has been the victim of a series of misunderstandings, myths and aporias. The initial intentions, devoid of any principle or dogma, have passed from hand to hand. The original definitionâ if only one can be identifiedâ has be ...

Attaching rigid wearables to ones skin may be socially challenging to be accustomed since their wearers may feel vulnerable with compromising their privacy, especially if the device is for tracking neurological or medical conditions. The development of fle ...

The Kunsthal in Rotterdam is a key work in the oeuvre of OMA/Rem Koolhaas that marks the threshold between the firmâ s architectural production of the decades before and after 1990. This doctoral thesis aims at a deeper and comprehensive understanding of ...

Optical fibers have reshaped the technological landscape, from optical networks and high-speed data communication to in situ imaging and non-invasive surgery methods. The revolution allowed by these fibers has been made possible by its fabrication method, ...

Mechanical sensing represents a key functionality in soft electronics for applications in health monitoring, human–machine interaction, or soft robotics. Current approaches typically rely on intricate networks of sensors specific to one type of deformation ...

Architecture and philosophy are no strangers to one another. In philosophical writings, architecture appears referred to, spoken of, described, defined, categorized, and figuratively used. In architectural discourse, by theoreticians and practitioners alik ...

The recent development of the “Common” as an interdisciplinary field of reflection seems to show some restraint with respect to the architectural culture that precedes it. This proposal invites to explore the intensities and the reasons for such a resistan ...

In the last ten years, new sources of urban big data have made it possible for algorithms to increasingly control how the city is perceived, understood and managed by its inhabitants; this is the data-driven city. New efforts in the social sciences, like ...

Clutches are key elements for blocking or coupling motion in wearable systems such as soft exoskeletons, haptic clothing, and rehabilitation equipment. Electrostatic clutches (ESclutches) are compact and light, making them particularly well-suited for wear ...

« How do we pile up dwellings without sacrificing their independence ? » Nicolas John Habraken asks the question in those terms in the book he first published in Dutch in 1961 then in English in 1972, Supports: An Alternative to Mass Housing, as an introd ...

Detection of curvilinear structures has long been of interest due to its wide range of applications. Large amounts of imaging data could be readily used in many fields, but it is practically not possible to analyze them manually. Hence, the need for automa ...
