: Occupants’ visual comfort in an indoor space strongly depend on the quantity and quality of the daylight inside the space which can be altered with the type of window glazing. In this study, we compared the visual comfort perception of participants with ...

The field of micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) evolved from the microelectronic industry and the technologies developed to fabricate integrated circuits. As a result, MEMS are commonly fabricated on silicon wafers. The development of MEMS has been dri ...

Multimaterial thermally drawn fibers are becoming important building blocks in several foreseen applications in surgical probes, protective gears, or medical textiles. Here, the influence of the thermal drawing parameters on the degree of polymer chain ori ...

Objective Temperature–color interaction effects on subjective perception and physiological responses are investigated using a novel hybrid experimental method combining thermal and visual stimuli from real and virtual reality (VR) environments, respectivel ...

The design of highly glazed building has become a worldwide trend in modern architecture. However, glazing may induce large thermal loss in winter while increase cooling load in summer, and it may also cause glare. In order to solve the problems, a novel m ...

Within the scope of a broader research project about daylight and temperature interaction effects on human responses, this paper investigates how daylight transmitted through spectrally selective glazing (blue, orange and a reference neutral) affects therm ...

Over the past years, increasing efforts have been devoted to understand how people perceive the indoor environment with the goal to improve building design and operation. Studies have separately addressed the effects of the four main aspects that influence ...

Modern envelope glazing relies on nanoscale coatings to meet a range of specific needs. Low emissivity coatings can improve the thermal performance of glazing thanks to a thin metallic film. However, the conductive nature of this layer leads to an attenuat ...

A transparent polymer film with embedded micro mirrors is developed, and it can be attached to a window glass pane for daylighting, improving visual comfort and reducing cooling load in buildings by redirecting sunlight. Despite existing cutting-edge techn ...

This study investigates the effect of daylight transmitted through three coloured glazing types (blue, orange and neutral) on thermal responses and overall comfort, at three temperature levels (19 °C, 22 °C and 26 °C). The goal is threefold: (i) understand ...

In our daily lives we are exposed simultaneously to multiple sensory stimuli, such as visual, thermal, acoustic and olfactory. Experienced together, they shape our perception of the environment and determine our comfort. In indoor environments, stimuli are ...

Complex fenestration systems (CFS) designed to collect and redirect daylight from the sky-vault are generally placed on the upper part of a window in order to improve the distribution of indoor daylight. Due to their additional function as solar protection ...

In our experience of daylit architecture, our visual perception is greatly impacted by the ephemeral and inherently dynamic conditions of the surrounding environment. Driven by changes in sky type, time-of-day, and time-of-year, these variable conditions c ...

We previously developed a Camera-Like Light Sensor (CLLS) to record images using a novel High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging vision sensor. The device was equipped with customized filters for adapting the camera’s spectral sensitivity to both photopic and cir ...

The appropriate choice of glazing in a facade depends on many factors. They include amongst other criteria: location, orientation, climatic condition, energetic efficiency, usage of the building, required user comfort, and the architectural concept. On the ...

Complex Fenestration Systems (CFS) are advanced daylighting systems that are placed on the upper part of a window to improve the indoor daylight distribution within rooms. Due to their double function of daylight redirection and solar protection, they are ...

The inclusion of daylight in buildings represents several benefits: its use not only signifies a reduction in the building energy consumption through the compensation of electric lighting, it also has positive effects in the execution of human activities. ...

This Recommended Practice conveniently gathers the basic data and techniques which help those concerned with the design of buildings and lighting systems understand and appreciate the opportunities and constraints inherent in daylighting. Daylighted buildi ...

We describe a reconfigurable lighting system for indoor solar illumination which provides a new way for solar energy conservation. We have experimentally demonstrated an electrically tunable optofluidic light switch which takes the key role for the reconfi ...

The establishment of climate-based daylight modeling within research and practice has led to a fundamental reassessment of both the basis and purpose of daylight metrics. Whilst there is no consensus yet on the precise nature of the metric(s) that should r ...
