In the vast expanse of the Universe and on our planet, nuclei exist in a state of excitement. These excited nuclear states (isomers) can persist for varying periods, from fractions of a second to billions of years and beyond, before decaying to their groun ...

The electronic structure of surfaces plays a key role in the properties of quantum devices. However, surfaces are also the most challenging to simulate and engineer. Here, the electronic structure of InAs(001), InAs(111), and InSb(110) surfaces is studied ...

The automation of ab initio simulations is essential in view of performing high-throughput (HT) computational screenings oriented to the discovery of novel materials with desired physical properties. In this work, we propose algorithms and implementations ...

The cascade of electronic phases in CsV3Sb5 raises the prospect to disentangle their mutual interactions in a clean, strongly interacting kagome lattice. When the kagome planes are stacked into a crystal, its electronic dimensionality encodes how much of t ...

In recent years, we have been witnessing a paradigm shift in computational materials science. In fact, traditional methods, mostly developed in the second half of the XXth century, are being complemented, extended, and sometimes even completely replaced by ...

The magnetic, noncollinear parametrization of Dudarev's DFT + U method is generalized to fully relativistic ultrasoft pseudopotentials. We present the definition of the DFT + U total energy functional and the calculation of forces and stresses in the case ...

We develop a computationally efficient scheme to accurately determine finite-temperature band gaps for metal halide perovskites belonging to the class ABX(3) (A = Rb, Cs; B = Ge, Sn, Pb; and X = F, Cl, Br, I). First, an initial estimate of the band gap is ...

Transition metal oxides represent a class of materials displaying very unusual electronic, structural and magnetic properties. They are extremely interesting, both from a technological and fundamental point of view. The most important characteristic of the ...

The subject of the present work is discovery and in-depth characterization of a new class of functional materials. Tuning of the bond polarity and orbital occupation with a goal of establishing balance between localization and delocalization of electrons - ...

Non-covalent bonding patterns are commonly harvested as a design principle in the field of catalysis, supramolecular chemistry, and functional materials to name a few. Yet, their computational description generally neglects finite temperature and environme ...

Recent theoretical advances, based on a combination of concepts from Thouless' topological theory of adiabatic charge transport and a newly introduced gauge-invariance principle for transport coefficients, have permitted to connect (and reconcile) Faraday' ...

The most promising solution towards cementitious materials with a lower carbon footprint is the partial substitution of the clinker by supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) such as fly ash, blast furnace slag, limestone and calcined clays. The produc ...

Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have gained significant attention in nanoelectronics due to their potential for precise tuning of electronic properties through variations in edge structure and ribbon width. However, the synthesis of GNRs with highly sought-aft ...

Ferroelectric perovskite oxides are widely used in sensors, actuators and optical modulators and, at the same time, they show promise for implementation in future applications such as energy storage, memory and cooling devices. At the infancy of the discov ...

The electron self-interaction is a long-standing problem in density functional theory and is particularly critical in the description of polarons. Polarons are quasiparticles involving charge localization coupled with self-induced lattice distortions. Sinc ...

We present first-principles calculations of the dynamic susceptibility in strained and doped ferromagnetic MnBi using time-dependent density functional theory. In spite of being a metal, MnBi exhibits signatures of strong correlation and a proper descripti ...

Empowered by ever-increasing computational power and algorithmic developments, electronic-structure simulations continue to drive research and innovation in materials science. In this context, ab-initio calculations offer an unbiased platform for the under ...

We develop a unified theoretical framework encompassing one-body and many-body forms of self-interaction. We find an analytic expression for both the one-body and the many-body self-interaction energies, and quantitatively connect the two expressions throu ...

TaAs is a prime example of a topological semimetal with two types of Weyl nodes, W-1 and W-2, whose bulk signatures have proven elusive. We apply Landau level spectroscopy to crystals with multiple facets and identify-among other low-energy excitations bet ...

Recent neutron-diffraction experiments in honeycomb CrI3 quasi-2D ferromagnets have evinced the existence of a gap at the Dirac point in their spin-wave spectra. The existence of this gap has been attributed to strong in-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya or Kita ...
