Particle accelerators foresee the use of Nb3Sn in the next generation of dipole magnets. A common design strategy is to grade the coil, i.e., to optimize the quantity of superconductor in the turns with respect to the magnetic field intensity. As a consequ ...

The latest standard "New Dual" power module has been developed for both silicon and silicon-carbide devices to meet the increasing demands in high reliability and high temperature power electronic applications. Due to the new package is just starting to re ...

The forced response of rigid rotors, supported by herringbone-grooved gas journal bearings are investigated numerically and experimentally. The rotor configurations are varied by using end cylinders, attached at both sides of the shaft. Three rotors with d ...

We investigate the load transmission along an elastic rod of finite cross-section in contact with a rigid cylinder, as system often referred to as the generalized capstan problem. In the presence of friction, the idealized classic capstan equation predicts ...

Flexure pivot based system (1) being one of: a force sensor, a force limiting device arranged to exert a predetermined threshold force, a torque limiting device arranged to exert a predetermined threshold torque, a programmable mechanical memory, or an acc ...

In the modern age of miniaturisation, Smart Materials, a type of material that reacts mechanically to a certain stimulus, have become an integral part of this revolution. Among these materials, Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs), which have the highest volumetric ...

Soft actuator is the main technology that drives the development of soft robotics as it defines the capabilities of soft machines. One of the key challenges in soft actuator research is to simultaneously produce complex morphing (e.g., surface morphing) an ...

The speed of change in the modern world is impressive. Within the last 50 years, many devices and technologies have significantly transformed their appearance, intrinsic characteristics and improved their performance. Computers have changed from the size o ...

The present work explores the impact of rotation on the dynamics of a thin liquid layer deposited on a spheroid (bi-axial ellipsoid) rotating around its vertical axis. An evolution equation based on the lubrication approximation was derived, which takes in ...

We present the effect of electric field, temperature, humidity, type of elastomer material, and encapsulation on the lifetime of silicone-based dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) under DC electric fields. DEAs are promising soft actuators, but little ha ...

Being able to understand how optical forces emerge from the interaction of light with matter is paramount for controlling the motion of nanoparticles as well as powering nanomotors. The purpose of this work is to uncover the physical mechanisms at the orig ...

This article presents a novel torque measuring setup working in the nano newton-meter range. The central novelty is a long (1 meter range) thin (diameter of a few tens of micrometers) metallic wire used instead of the relatively stiff torsion zone of the s ...

Tunable metasurfaces can shift their resonant frequency through different approaches, one of which is applying mechanical deformations. Here, we show the effects of two key factors on the tunability of deformable metasurfaces; the resonator geometry and su ...

The capacity to break symmetry and organize activity to move directionally is a fundamental property of eukaryotic cells. To explain the organization of cell-edge activity, models commonly rely on front-to-back gradients of functional components or regulat ...

Uniform magnetic fields are desired in a wide range of applications. The most known device achieving such a purpose is the pair of Helmholtz coils. It consists of two identical circular coils, with their main axis aligned and placed at a distance equal to ...

This paper addresses the design and manufacturing of a crab-leg based MEMS relay for a high power application. Thanks to a contact resistance lower than 100 mΩ, the relay can hold a current in the order of magnitude of an Ampere without further thermal lim ...

Monolithic integrated circuits (ICs) have been miniaturized over the past five decades, and today their components range in size from hundreds of microns to several nanometers. Making point contact with electrical samples under a microscope is referred to ...
