This thesis focuses on developing microfluidic systems using dielectrophoresis (DEP) to manipulate and isolate biological species. It presents several innovations in electrokinetic systems, including a device for pairing cells with minimal loss during enca ...

The nonlinear decay of oscillations of a liquid column in a U-shaped tube is investigated within the theoretical framework of the projection method formalized by Bongarzone et al. [Chaos 31, 123124 (2021)]. Starting from the full hydrodynamic system supple ...

In the nanoscale regime, flow behaviors for liquids show qualitative deviations from bulk expectations. In this work, we reveal by molecular dynamics simulations that plug flow down to nanoscale induces molecular friction that leads to a new flow structure ...

This thesis is a detailed description of three experimental investigations on aqueous interfaces. All projects made use of the microjet technology or the more recently developed flat-jet technique which enables the implementation of liquid water in vacuum ...

Liquid-in-liquid droplets are typically generated by the partitioning of immiscible fluids, e.g. by mechanical shearing with macroscopic homogenisers or microfluidic flow focussing. In contrast, partially miscible liquids with a critical solution temperatu ...

We present a novel concept for the controlled trapping and releasing of beads and cells in a PDMS microfluidic channel without obstacles present around the particle or in the channel. The trapping principle relies on a two-level microfluidic configuration: ...

In this work we dive into key questions regarding the wetting of a nanoscale droplet which provides fundamental understanding of Vapor-Liquid-Solid growth mode of nanowires. This understanding is important to performreproducible NW fabrication and allow th ...

The frequent contact people have with liquids containing pathogenic microorganisms provides opportunities for disease transmission. In this work, we quantified the transfer of bacteria—using E. coli as a model- from liquid to skin, estimated liquid retenti ...

Liquid-liquid microfluidic systems rely on the intricate control over the fluid properties of either miscible or immiscible mixtures. Herein, we report on the use of partially miscible binary liquid mixtures that lend their microfluidic properties from a h ...

In this work, we have studied various aspects of catalysts and catalytic processes at the solid-liquid interface, e.g. the reduction of supported PdO, the formation of Pd hydrides, their quantification, the their reactivity in a transient in time-resolved ...

The photoelectron spectra of both liquid and gas phase aromatic molecules are reported. The spectra were obtained using a 34.1 eV source produced by high harmonic generation and analysed with the help of high-level ab initio simulations using the reflectio ...

Water flooding of cathodic gas diffusion layers (GDLs) in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells at high current densities or low temperatures limits efficient operation due to disturbed transport of reactants to the catalytic sites or products away into the ...

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on subnanoliter (sub-nL) volumes are hindered by the limited sensitivity of the detector and the difficulties in positioning and holding such small samples in proximity of the detector. In this work, we report o ...

A device and method for the mechanical (partial or total) removal of the liquid phase of the external shell of a core-shell capsule is disclosed. The device comprises a main channel having at least one inlet, one outlet and a tubular element in between, ad ...

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy can open up the possibility of studying many scientifically and biologically relevant samples at the µm and sub-µm scale. Examples of vol ...

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has proven to be a robust power source to efficiently convert ambient mechanical energy into electricity. It experienced substantial growth in the past years owing to its appealing features that make it superior than othe ...

Optical micromanipulation allows the movement and patterning of discrete micro-particles within a liquid environment. However, for manufacturing applications it is desirable to remove the liquid, leaving the patterned particles in place. In this work, we h ...

The invention discloses a microfluidic device for the culture, selection and/or analysis of sample organisms such as nematodes, as well as for other biological entities such as for instance animal embryos. The device features reservoirs, culture chambers a ...

Nanowire based platforms are widely reported for sensing applications and for their potential in the bio-detection field. In the present work, memristive nanowire devices are implemented for label-free sensing in liquid samples as well as in dried samples ...

Optical trapping was used for decades in biotechnology for a broad range of applications. It can be used for remote manipulation, application of pico-Newton forces and even study DNA processes. Nevertheless, optical trapping setups can be cumbersome. In or ...
