We introduce TacTiles, light (1.8g), low-power (130 mV), and small form -factor (1cm(3)) electromagnetic actuators that can form a flexible haptic array to provide localized tactile feedback. Our novel hardware design uses a custom 8 -layer PCB, dampening ...

Robotic teleoperation is fundamental to augment the resilience, precision, and force of robots with the cognition of the operator. However, current interfaces, such as joysticks and remote controllers, are often complicated to handle since they require cog ...

The concept of adaptivity is crucial in enterprise software systems with a large user base. Adaptive user interfaces (AUI) is an emerging research area that enables customized user experience based on user activities. Most of the existing studies that are ...

Haptic feedback located on the torso is proposed to enhance the state awareness of a user in virtual reality or during teleoperation while leaving the hands free for manipulation and communication. We provide haptic feedback on the torso by compressing a s ...

The Center for Artificial Muscles of EPFL in Neuchâtel focuses his research on designing a less invasive cardiac assist device based on a dielectric elastomer actuator. The idea is to place a ring around the aorta and activate it to help failing heart pump ...

We present X-shells, a new class of deployable structures formed by an ensemble of elastically deforming beams coupled through rotational joints. An X-shell can be assembled conveniently in a flat configuration from standard elastic beam elements and then ...

Elastic gridshells comprise an initially planar network of elastic rods that are actuated into a shell-like structure by loading their extremities. The resulting actuated form derives from the elastic buckling of the rods subjected to inextensibility. We s ...

A variety of reconfigurable surface devices, utilizing large numbers of actuated physical pixels to produce discretized 3D contours, have been developed for different purposes in research and industry. The difficulty of integrating many actuators in close ...

Thanks to better actuator technologies and control algorithms, humanoid robots to date can perform a wide range of locomotion activities outside lab environments. These robots face various control challenges like high dimensionality, contact switches durin ...

A fully wearable system used for communication and information transfer between two users or between a user and a machine to render an effective and intuitive physical interface for combined input and output functions, the fully wearable system including a ...

My thesis advances the field of shape memory polymer (SMP) actuators by providing a versatile strategy to arbitrarily reconfigure large arrays of densely packed latching soft actuators. It exploits two key intrinsic characteristics of SMPs, which are their ...

Recent advances in remote sensing and actuation technologies, coupled with the large reach of the internet, allowed for the emergence of applications such as cyber-physical labs. Cyber-physical labs are the digital and remotely-accessible equivalent of the ...

A system for interacting with a remote object comprising a wearable jacket for a user, two actuators for supporting arms of the user, motors for causing movements to at least one of a torso and the arms of the user, and sensors for measuring at least one o ...

A high-resolution flexible active skin with a matrix of 32x24 individually addressable tactile pixels on a 4 mm pitch is reported, based on shape memory polymer (SMP) actuators. The intrinsic multistable nature of SMPs, and their more than hundred-fold var ...
