Translaminar fracture toughness is pivotal for notch sensitivity and damage tolerance of fibre-reinforced composites. Hybridisation offers a promising pathway for enhancing this parameter in thin-ply composites. Three novel mini-compact tension specimen ge ...

This work examines the fatigue crack-arresting capability of thin PEI and PVDF thermoplastic interlayers in short-glass fiber-modified epoxy and core-shell rubber-modified epoxy materials. Singleedge notch bending epoxy specimens with and without interlaye ...

Situational awareness strategies are essential for the reliable and secure operation of the electric power grid which represents critical infrastructure in modern society. With the rise of converter-interfaced renewable generation and the consequent shift ...

This paper presents an experimental study of the wet freeze-thaw (FT) durability of a fibre-polymer composite produced by vacuum infusion using an innovative bio-based unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and basalt fibres. As the benchmark, an equivalent com ...

Origami offers a novel design possibility for periodic sandwich cores. The curved-crease origami is adopted to enhance the anti-buckling performance and reduce the abrupt change of the carbon fibers in the origami sandwich cores. CFRP curved-crease origami ...

Producing high-performance materials from renewable carbon at high efficiency and ensuring a sustainable end-of-life scenario can notably reduce the CO2 footprint of the plastics industry. A recent example of such a material is poly(butylene xylosediglyoxy ...

We propose a mathematical and numerical model for the simulation of the heart function that couples cardiac electrophysiology, active and passive mechanics and hemodynamics, and includes reduced models for cardiac valves and the circulatory system. Our mod ...

The mortar finite element method is a well-established method for the numerical solution of partial differential equations on domains displaying non-conforming interfaces. The method is known for its application in computational contact mechanics. However, ...

Buckled beams have become key building blocks in compliant mechanisms to achieve nonlinear behaviors, such as bistability, constant-force and stiffness tuning. However, designing and modeling such components is challenging due to their highly nonlinear cha ...

The through-thickness compressive behavior of fabric reinforcements is crucial in liquid composite molding manufacturing processes. Predictive simulations of the compressive response are thus necessary to enable a virtual processing workflow. These are com ...

Helicon current drive (CD), also called fast wave CD in the lower hybrid range of frequencies, has long been regarded as a promising CD tool for reactor grade plasmas. A newly installed MW-level system at DIII-D will be the first test of this technology in ...

We demonstrate the application of inkjet-printed near room-temperature chemiresistors composed of polymer-carbon black (CB) composites for detecting and classifying volatile organic compounds (VOC). Our results demonstrate that the printed sensors can sele ...

Objective.Body-Machine Interfaces (BoMIs) establish a way to operate a variety of devices, allowing their users to extend the limits of their motor abilities by exploiting the redundancy of muscles and motions that remain available after spinal cord injury ...

In this manuscript we describe the realization of a minimal hybrid microswimmer, composed of a ferromagnetic nanorod and a paramagnetic microsphere. The unbounded pair is propelled in water upon application of a swinging magnetic field that induces a perio ...

We propose a method for modelling spatially dependent functional data, based on regression with differential regularization. The regularizing term enables to include problem-specific information about the spatio-temporal variation of phenomenon under study ...

We consider an adaptive isogeometric method (AIGM) based on (truncated) hierarchical B-splines and present the study of its numerical properties. By following [10, 12, 11], optimal convergence rates of the AIGM can be proved when suitable approximation cla ...

We provide a computational comparison of the performance of stentless and stented aortic prostheses, in terms of aortic root displacements and internal stresses. To this aim, we consider three real patients; for each of them, we draw the two prostheses con ...

Field observations as well as experimental tests have shown that both the strength and displacement capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) members might be significantly reduced by the presence of lap splices. This degradation applies in particular if the lo ...

Buckled periodic beams possess a geometrically nonlinear, load-deformation relation and intrinsic length scales such that stable, nonlinear waves are possible. In part I of this paper, a model has been derived that predict compressive/rarefaction, superson ...

The development of electric vehicles is considered as one of the sustainable way in the automotive industry to reduce greenhouse gases emissions and to allow transportation sector to comply with environmental targets required in present and future years. D ...
