The increasing complexity of transformer models in artificial intelligence expands their computational costs, memory usage, and energy consumption. Hardware acceleration tackles the ensuing challenges by designing processors and accelerators tailored for t ...

Cryogenic operation is the backbone of many cutting edge applications. Significant work has been done to characterize and model all cryogenic effects for creating a reliable, robust and efficient cryogenic design across a wide range of technologies and pro ...

Today's continued increase in demand for processing power, despite the slowdown of Moore's law, has led to an increase in processor count, which has resulted in energy consumption and distribution problems. To address this, there is a growing trend toward ...

Dataflow programming is a methodology that enables the development of high-level, parametric programs that are independent of the underlying platform. This approach is particularly useful for heterogeneous platforms, as it eliminates the need to rewrite ap ...

This thesis demonstrates that it is feasible for systems code to expose a latency interface that describes its latency and related side effects for all inputs, just like the code's semantic interface describes its functionality and related side effects. S ...

Dataflow circuits promise to overcome the scheduling limitations of standard HLS solutions. However, their performance suffers due to timing overheads caused by their handshake communication protocol. Current pipelining solutions fail to account for logic ...

Key-Value Stores (KVS) are foundational infrastructure components for online services. Due to their latency-critical nature, today’s best-performing KVS contain a plethora of full-stack optimizations commonly targeting read-mostly, popularity-skewed worklo ...

Heterogeneous processing platforms combining in various architectures CPUs, GPUs, and programmable logic, are continuously evolving providing at each generation higher theoretical levels of computing performance. However, the challenge of how efficiently s ...

Commercial high-level synthesis tools typically produce statically scheduled circuits. Yet, effective C-to-circuit conversion of arbitrary software applications calls for dataflow circuits, as they can handle efficiently variable latencies (e.g., caches) a ...

The design of user-level integrated energy systems is challenged by a variety of combinations of energy converters, complex cascade utilization of multiple energy flows, as well as sequential matching between stochastic energy resources and periodic energy ...

Specifying utility functions is a key step towards applying the discrete choice framework for understanding the behaviour processes that govern user choices. However, identifying the utility function specifications that best model and explain the observed ...

In my thesis, I reveal several already-existing and emerging challenges in multi-objective management of multiprocessor systems, and address them through novel solutions, from heuristics to RL, depending on the complexity of the problem. Conventional multi ...

Despite the high number of investments for data-based models in the expansion of Industry 4.0, too little effort has been made to ensure the maintenance of those models. In a data-streaming environment, data-based models are subject to concept drifts. A co ...

Strong gravitational lensing is a powerful probe of cosmology and the dark matter distribution. Efficient lensing software is already a necessity to fully use its potential and the performance demands will only increase with the upcoming generation of tele ...

The performance of programs executed on heterogeneous parallel platforms largely depends on the design choices regarding how to partition the processing on the various different processing units. In other words, it depends on the assumptions and parameters ...

High-level synthesis tools, both commercial and academic, typically rely on static scheduling to produce high-throughput pipelines. However, in applications with unpredictable memory accesses or irregular control flow, these tools need to make pessimistic ...

Writing and optimizing application software for heterogeneous platforms including GPU units is a very difficult task that requires designer efforts and resources to consider several key elements to obtain good performance. Dataflow programming has shown to ...

We demonstrate cryogenic switching devices based on HEMT technology for scalable quantum computer (QC) control and readout signal routing. The switches are implemented in a quantum well network design without metal contacts between gates, and exhibit extre ...

Deeply-scaled three-dimensional (3D) Multi-Processor Systems-on-Chip (MPSoCs) enable high performance and massive communication bandwidth for next-generation computing. However, as process nodes shrink, temperature-dependent leakage dramatically increases, ...

The advent of online video streaming services along with the users' demand for high-quality contents require High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), which provides higher quality and compression at the cost of increased complexity. On one hand, HEVC exposes a ...
