The recent rise in interest in point clouds as an imaging modality has motivated standardization groups such as JPEG and MPEG to launch activities aiming at developing compression standards for point clouds. Lossy compression usually introduces visual arti ...

A method for optimizing at least one of a geometry, an implantation procedure, and/or stimulation protocol of one or more electrodes for an electrical stimulation of a target structure in a nervous system of a living being by a computer device, the method ...

Arctic clouds are sensitive to atmospheric particles since these are sometimes in such low concentrations that clouds cannot always form under supersaturated water vapor conditions. This is especially true in the late summer, when aerosol concentrations ar ...

The representation of Arctic clouds and their phase distributions, i.e., the amount of ice and supercooled water, influences predictions of future Arctic warming. Therefore, it is essential that cloud phase is correctly captured by models in order to accur ...

In this thesis, we concentrate on advancing high-level behavioral control policies for robotic systems within the framework of Dynamical Systems (DS). Throughout the course of this research, a unifying thread weaving through diverse fields emerges, and tha ...

In this work, we tackle the task of estimating the 6D pose of an object from point cloud data. While recent learning-based approaches have shown remarkable success on synthetic datasets, we have observed them to fail in the presence of real-world data. We ...

Clouds are omnipresent in the Earth's atmosphere. Their phase composition significantly modulates their interaction with solar and terrestrial radiation, as well as precipitation formation. Particularly for clouds containing both phases, known as mixed-pha ...

We propose a method to extract orthogonal views of facades from photogrammetric models of cities. This method was applied to extract all facades of the city of Venice. The result images open up new areas of research in architectural history. ...

The Arctic is one of the most rapidly warming regions of the globe. Low-level clouds and fog modify the energy transfer from and to space and play a key role in the observed strong Arctic surface warming, a phenomenon commonly termed "Arctic amplification" ...

Point clouds are effective data structures for the rep- resentation of three-dimensional media and hence adopted in a wide range of practical applications. In many cases, the portrayed data is expected to be visualized by humans. After acquisition, point c ...

Visual data play a crucial role in modern society, and the rate at which images and videos are acquired, stored, and exchanged every day is rapidly increasing. Image compression is the key technology that enables storing and sharing of visual content in an ...

3D single object tracking (SOT) is an indispensable part of automated driving. Existing approaches rely heavily on large, densely labeled datasets. However, annotating point clouds is both costly and time-consuming. Inspired by the great success of cycle t ...

In this work, we tackle the problem of 7-DoF grasping pose estimation(6-DoF with the opening width of parallel-jaw gripper) from point cloud data, which is a fundamental task in robotic manipulation. Most existing methods adopt 3D voxel CNNs as the backbon ...

Previous studies have shown that access to a satisfactory view to the outside with sufficient daylight is essential for building occupants' health and well-being. It has also been suggested that certain features of visual content improve view-out quality, ...

Ice-nucleating particles (INPs) enable ice formation, profoundly affecting the microphysical and radiative properties, lifetimes, and precipitation rates of clouds. Mineral dust emitted from arid regions, particularly potassium-containing feldspar (K-felds ...

Recent advances in image compression have made it both possible and desirable for image quality to approach the visually lossless range. However, the most commonly used subjective visual quality assessment protocols, e.g. those reported in ITU-T Rec. BT.50 ...

Some implications of absolute geometries in the description of complex systems dynamics, at various scale resolutions are highlighted. In such context, by means of an analytic geometry of 2 x 2 matrices, a generalization of the standard velocities space in ...

This study examines the impact of light absorption from biomass burning (BB) brown carbon (BrC) in the Mediterranean basin from local and distant fire incidents during a typical fire season in August 2019 and under severe fire activity in August 2021. The ...

Federated Learning by nature is susceptible to low-quality, corrupted, or even malicious data that can severely degrade the quality of the learned model. Traditional techniques for data valuation cannot be applied as the data is never revealed. We present ...

The past decades have witnessed rapid growth in imaging as a major form of communication between individuals. Due to recent advances in capture, storage, delivery and display technologies, consumers demand improved perceptual quality while requiring reduce ...
