Optical absorption and nonlinear index are important performance drivers in devices like microcombs and parametric oscillators. Here we use resonance-enhanced nonlinear spectroscopy to characterize absorption limits and nonlinear index for some integrated ...

Monitoring fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRPC) during their production and operation is becoming crucial to track the performance of the final parts and optimize the overall life cycle. The challenges associated with integrating multifunctional sens ...

In many applications, such as textiles, fibreglass, paper and several kinds of biological fibrous tissues, the main load-bearing constituents at the micro-scale are arranged as a fibre network. In these materials, rupture is usually driven by micro-mechani ...

Hybrid composites become popular and are today used in a large number of contemporary structural applications. When compared to non-hybrid composites, hybridization offers additional benefits since the mixing of cheaper, low-quality fibers, with more expen ...

The present work investigates a novel and practical method to evaluate the healing efficiency of carbon-reinforced polymer composites. The method should be representative of damage occurring during the lifetime of a composite part, should tend to damage th ...

Biomass burning emissions often contain brown carbon (BrC), which represents a large family of light-absorbing organics that are chemically complex, thus making it difficult to estimate their absorption of incoming solar radiation, resulting in large uncer ...

The fiber thermal drawing process has emerged as a simple and scalable technique for the fabrication of multifunctional and flexible electronics. The integration of materials with various physical and functional properties in well-defined architectures ope ...

Capillarity plays a crucial role in many natural and engineered systems, ranging from nutrient delivery in plants to functional textiles for wear comfort or thermal heat pipes for heat dissipation. Unlike nano- or microfluidic systems with well-defined por ...

The measurement and generation of mechanical deformations is a key functionality in health monitoring, human-machine interaction, and soft robotics. However, current methods typically rely on small and hard transducers, which result in poor performance, cu ...

The controlled modification of the electronic properties of ZnO nanorods via transition metal doping is reported. A series of ZnO nanorods were synthesized by chemical bath growth with varying Co content from 0 to 20 atomic% in the growth solution. Optoele ...

Light matter interactions such as extinction, reflection, and transmission can be described by classical optics. Dur-ing the past decades, research focused on a novel resonant extinction type called plasmonics that allows for en-hancement of both types of ...

Miniaturization has been at the forefront of scientific research in the past decade covering diverse areas such as electronics, mechanics, and optics. While 'small is beautiful' may be a vast generalization, the true benefits of miniaturization are especia ...

In this study, three novel thermoplastic impregnation processes were analyzed towards automotive applications. The first process is thermoplastic compression resin transfer molding in which a glass fiber mat is impregnated in through thickness by a thermop ...

Optical microresonators with high quality (Q) factors are essential to a wide range of integrated photonic devices. Steady efforts have been directed towards increasing microresonator Q factors across a variety of platforms. With success in reducing microf ...

The middle-infrared (mid-IR) spectral range hosts the most intense roto-vibrational absorption lines of many important molecules. Particularly, mid-IR spectroscopy constitutes a unique tool for identifying and quantifying molecular species through their mi ...
