In 1948, Claude Shannon laid the foundations of information theory, which grew out of a study to find the ultimate limits of source compression, and of reliable communication. Since then, information theory has proved itself not only as a quest to find the ...

There is sustained and widespread interest in understanding the limit, if there is any, to the human life span. Apart from its intrinsic and biological interest, changes in survival in old age have implications for the sustainability of social security sys ...

In this paper, we study the compressibility of random processes and fields, called generalized Levy processes, that are solutions of stochastic differential equations driven by d-dimensional periodic Levy white noises. Our results are based on the estimati ...

Consider a stream of status updates generated by a source, where each update is of one of two types: high priority or ordinary (low priority). These updates are to be transmitted through a network to a monitor. However, the transmission policy of each pack ...

We provide an algorithm to generate trajectories of sparse stochastic processes that are solutions of linear ordinary differential equations driven by Levy white noises. A recent paper showed that these processes are limits in law of generalized compound-P ...

Though the following topics seem unlinked, most of the tools used in this thesis are related to random walks and renewal theory. After introducing the voter model, we consider the parabolic Anderson model with the voter model as catalyst. In GÄRTNER, DEN H ...

We consider integer programming problems in standard form max{c(T)x : Ax = b, x >= 0, x is an element of Z(n)} where A is an element of Z(mxn), b is an element of Z(m), and c is an element of Z(n). We show that such an integer program can be solved in time ...

In this article, we consider the use of barrier functions as a regularizing cost in economic model predictive control (EMPC). We focus on a specific variant, EMPC with generalized terminal constraints (G-EMPC), as it is suitable for tackling large-scale pr ...

Modern data storage systems are extremely large and consist of several tens or hundreds of nodes. In such systems, node failures are daily events, and safeguarding data from them poses a serious design challenge. The focus of this thesis is on the data rel ...

We introduce a definition of the notion of compressibility for infinite deterministic and i.i.d. random sequences which is based on the asymptotic behavior of truncated subsequences. For this purpose, we use asymptotic results regarding the distribution of ...

This work is a study of three interacting particle systems that are modified versions of the contact process. The contact process is a spin system defined on a graph and is commonly taken as a model for the spread of an infection in a population; transmiss ...

We study the multitype contact process on Z(d) under the assumption that one of the types has a birth rate that is larger than that of the other type, and larger than the critical value of the standard contact process. We prove that, if initially present, ...

We study some linear and nonlinear shot noise models where the jumps are drawn from a compound Poisson process with jump sizes following an Erlang-m distribution. We show that the associated Master equation can be written as a spatial mth order partial dif ...

We examine the fundamental properties that determine the basic performance metrics for opportunistic communications. We first consider the distribution of intercontact times between mobile devices. Using a diverse set of measured mobility traces, we find a ...

There are many geometric calibration methods for "standard" cameras. These methods, however, cannot be used for the calibration of telescopes with large focal lengths and complex off-axis optics. Moreover, specialized calibration methods for the telescopes ...

We present a probabilistic approach to quantify the hazard posed by volcanic ballistic projectiles (VBP) and their potential impact on the built environment. A model named Great Balls of Fire (GBF) is introduced to describe ballistic trajectories of VBPs a ...

Characterizing the dynamics of suspended sediment is crucial when investigating the long-term evolution of tidal landscapes. Here we apply a widely tested mathematical model which describes the dynamics of cohesive and noncohesive sediments, driven by the ...

Dynamic optimization problems affected by uncertainty are ubiquitous in many application domains. Decision makers typically model the uncertainty through random variables governed by a probability distribution. If the distribution is precisely known, then ...

We study stationary max-stable processes {n(t): t is an element of R} admitting a representation of the form n(t) = max(i is an element of N) (U-i +Y-i(t)), where Sigma(infinity)(i=1) delta U-i is a Poisson point process on R with intensity e(-u)du, and Y1 ...
