Magnetic skyrmions are whirl-like spin configurations with particle-like properties protected by non-trivial topology. Due to their unique spin structures and dynamical properties, they have attracted tremendous interests over the past decade, from fundame ...

Further miniaturisation of magnetic storage devices requires an advent of new types of magnets, since classical ferromagnetic materials show lack of remanence at nano- and subnanoscale. A single atom can represent the smallest possible bit of information. ...

Oxidation catalysis on reducible oxide-supported small metal clusters often involves lattice oxygen. The present work aims at differentiating whether the reaction takes place at the cluster/support interface or on the cluster. To that purpose, we trace the ...

Zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) is a II–V compound semiconductor with promising photovoltaic and thermoelectric applications. Its complex structure is susceptible to facile defect formation, which plays a key role in further optimization of the material. Raman spec ...

Skyrmions are topologically protected nanometer-sized magnetic vortices that have sparked interest for future spintronics applications aiming at high-density, high-speed and low-power consuming magnetic memory devices. One type of skyrmions appears in non- ...

Earth-abundant and low-cost semiconductors, such as zinc phosphide (Zn3P2), are promising candidates for the next generation photovoltaic applications. However, synthesis on commercially available substrates, which favors the formation of defects, and cont ...

With the rise of quantum computing and recent experiments into topological quantum computers come exciting new opportunities for III-V semiconductor quantum nanostructures. In this thesis, we explore the scalable fabrication of patterned arrays and branche ...

Chromium triiodide, CrI3, is emerging as a promising magnetic two-dimensional semiconductor where spins are ferromagnetically aligned within a single layer. Potential applications in spintronics arise from an antiferromagnetic ordering between adjacent lay ...

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) offers an ample range of complementary techniques which are able to provide essential information about the physical, chemical and structural properties of materials at the atomic scale, and hence makes a vast impact ...

We report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation that reveals a new mechanism responsible for the enhancement of electron-phonon coupling in doped semiconductors in which multiple inequivalent valleys are simultaneously populated. Using Rama ...

Iron phthalocyanine (FePc) is a molecular semiconductor whose building blocks are 1D ferromagnetic chains. It is shown that its optical and magnetic properties are controlled by the growth strategy, obtaining extremely high coercivities of over 1 T and mod ...
