Measuring animal behaviors is a crucial task in a range of scientific applications. Modern approaches with deep neural networks calls for developing solutions that solve a wide range of vision and language tasks. This ubiquitous need for understanding beha ...

Microscopy is one of the essential tools to quantify and advance our understanding of living systems. Modern digital microscopes enable measurements at unprecedented spatiotemporal scale, so automated processing methods are required to complete tasks such ...

In recent years, exploring deep generative models for generating time series has garnered significant interest within the research community. These models have found wide-ranging applications in areas such as data augmentation, scenario simulation, and the ...

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a valuable tool for studying subcutaneous implants in rodents, providing non-invasive insight into biomaterial conformability and longitudinal characterization. However, considerable variability in existing image analysi ...

In this thesis, we explore techniques for addressing the communication bottleneck in data-parallel distributed training of deep learning models. We investigate algorithms that either reduce the size of the messages that are exchanged between workers, or th ...

In digital imaging, especially in the process of data acquisition and transmission, images are often affected by impulsive noise. Therefore, it is essential to remove impulsive noise from images before any further processing. Due to the remarkable performa ...

Transfer learning can significantly improve the sample efficiency of neural networks, by exploiting the relatedness between a data-scarce target task and a data-abundant source task. Despite years of successful applications, transfer learning practice often r ...

This thesis consists of three applications of machine learning techniques to empirical asset pricing. In the first part, which is co-authored work with Oksana Bashchenko, we develop a new method that detects jumps nonparametrically in financial time series ...

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) represent the new reference approach for semantic segmentation of very-high-resolution (VHR) images, due to their ability to automatically capture semantic information while learning relevant features. However, as for m ...

Brain signatures of functional activity have shown promising results in both decoding brain states, meaning distinguishing between different tasks, and fingerprinting, that is identifying individuals within a large group. Importantly, these brain signature ...

This paper addresses the complexity reduction of stochastic homogenization of a class of random materials for a stationary diffusion equation. A cost-efficient approximation of the correctors is obtained using a method designed to exploit quasi-periodicity ...

Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) is an emerging label-free technique that produces images containing morphological and dynamical information without contrast agents. Unfortunately, the phase is wrapped in most imaging system. Phase unwrapping is the comput ...

The seminal work of DiPerna and Lions (Invent Math 98(3):511-547, 1989) guarantees the existence and uniqueness of regular Lagrangian flows for Sobolev vector fields. The latter is a suitable selection of trajectories of the related ODE satisfying addition ...

Thanks to recent advancements in image processing and deep learning techniques, visual surface inspection in production lines has become an automated process as long as all the defects are visible in a single or a few images. However, it is often necessary ...

A growing body of empirical evidence supports the notion of diverse neurobiological processes underlying learning-induced plasticity changes in the human brain. There are still open questions about how brain plasticity depends on cognitive task complexity, ...

Learning how to act and adapting to unexpected changes are remarkable capabilities of humans and other animals. In the absence of a direct recipe to follow in life, behaviour is often guided by rewarding and by surprising events. A positive or a negative o ...

Heuristic tools from statistical physics have been used in the past to locate the phase transitions and compute the optimal learning and generalization errors in the teacher-student scenario in multi-layer neural networks. In this contribution, we provide ...

Investigations of visual crowding, where a target is difficult to identify because of flanking elements, has largely used a theoretical perspective based on local interactions where flanking elements pool with or substitute for properties of the target. Th ...

In this paper we address the problem of learning image structures directly from sparse codes. We first model images as linear combinations of molecules, which are themselves groups of atoms from a redundant dictionary. We then formulate a new structure lea ...
