Cardiovascular (CV) risk factors for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are conventionally classified as 'traditional' and 'novel'. We argue that this classification is obsolete and potentially counterproductive. Further, we discuss problems with the common practic ...

The serine proteases CAP1/Prss8 and CAP3/St14 are identified as ENaC channel-activating proteases in vitro, highly suggesting that they are required for proteolytic activation of ENaC in vivo. The present study tested whether CAP3/St14 is relevant for rena ...

In phenylketonuria, absence or malfunction of the phenylalanine hydroxylase enzyme results in toxic accumulation of phenylalanine in the body. An injectable recombinant enzyme therapy was recently approved and has the potential to improve the quality of li ...

Aprotinin is a broad-spectrum serine protease inhibitor used in the clinic as an anti-fibrinolytic agent in fibrin-based tissue sealants. However, upon re-exposure, some patients suffer from hypersensitivity immune reactions likely related to the bovine or ...

Factor XII (FXII) is a plasma protease that has emerged in recent years as a potential target to treat or prevent pathological thrombosis, to inhibit contact activation in extracorporeal circulation, and to treat the swelling disorder hereditary angioedema ...

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) are used as high-sensitive enhancer for magnetic resonance imaging, where they represent a promising tool for early diagnosis of destructive diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Since we could demon ...

Background: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been shown to induce ablation and functional occlusion of tumor-associated lymphatic vessels. However, direct effects of PDT on lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) have not been studied so far. The aim of this stud ...

Polymorphonuclear neutrophils contain at least four serine endopeptidases, namely neutrophil elastase (NE), proteinase 3 (PR3), cathepsin G (CatG), and NSP4, which contribute to the regulation of infection and of inflammatory processes. In physiological co ...

Mass spectrometry (MS) has emerged over the last two decades as the analytical technique of choice in systems-level protein studies, known as proteomics. Two are the MS-based approaches generally applied to proteomics: bottom-up (BU), which relies on the p ...

Conventional therapeutics are often limited by their targeting ability, resulting in harmful and potential fatal side-effects for the patients. Recently, new strategies have been developed to improve target specificity of drugs in order to generate more ef ...

Fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLI) is increasingly recognized as a powerful tool for biochemical and cellular investigations, including in vivo applications. Fluorescence lifetime is an intrinsic characteristic of any fluorescent dye which, to a large ext ...

Combined individually tailored methods for diagnosis and therapy (theragnostics) could be beneficial in destructive diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Nanoparticles are promising candidates for theragnostics due to their excellent biocompatibility. Na ...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is based on the combined administration of photosensitizing drugs and light to treat a variety of malignant, pre-malignant and also non-malignant diseases. The reactive species resulting from the excitation of the photosensitizer ...

Background Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPION) are used in diagnostic imaging of a variety of different diseases. For such in-vivo application, an additional coating with a polymer, for example polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), is needed to stabilize ...

Nanotechnology provides new opportunities in human medicine, mainly for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is often diagnosed after irreversible joint structural damage has occurred. There is an urgent nee ...

Hemostasis is a complex physiological process responsible for the prevention of blood loss caused by vascular injury. The dysregulation of this delicate mechanism can lead to thromboembolic diseases, the leading cause of death worldwide. Anticoagulants are ...

The present study was initiated with the aim to assess the in vivo electrochemical corrosion behaviour of CoCrMo biomedical alloys in human synovial fluids in an attempt to identify possible patient or pathology specific effects. For this, electrochemical ...

Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease causing recurring inflammatory joint attacks. These attacks are characterized by macrophage infiltration contributing to joint destruction. Studies have shown that RA treatment efficacy is correl ...

Cellular uptake and intracellular trafficking of polymer conjugates or polymer nanoparticles is typically monitored using fluorescence-based techniques such as confocal microscopy. While these methods have provided a wealth of insight into the internalizat ...

The mechanism of action of sulfasalazine, an anti-inflammatory drug used against inflammatory bowel diseases and rheumatoid arthritis is, despite its medical importance, still not well understood. Recently, it was shown that sulfasalazine and its metabolit ...
