Nature Photonics spoke with Hatice Altug, from the & Eacute;cole Polytechnique F & eacute;d & eacute;rale de Lausanne (EPFL), Thomas Krauss, from the University of York, and Malini Olivo from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) about o ...

Application of revolve sphere levelling (RSL) as a practical and effective image processing tool for enhancing scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) images of graphene atomic lattices is presented. Low-cost, ambient, and non-invasive STM methods overcome li ...

Electrochemical CO2 reduction (eCO(2)R) is a promising strategy to transform detrimental CO2 emissions into sustainable fuels and chemicals. Key requirements for advancing this field are the development of analytical systems and of methods that are able to ...

A variety of biosensors have been proposed to quickly detect and measure the properties of individual microorganisms among heterogeneous populations, but challenges related to cost, portability, stability, sensitivity, and power consumption limit their app ...

Non-covalent interactions are ubiquitous in nature. The diversity and functionality of these interactions are employed by nature as a universal tool for building the molecular mechanism of life. Although weak, these interactions play a key role in both for ...

The design of organometallic complexes is at the heart of modern organic chemistry and catalysis. Recently, on-surface synthesis has emerged as a disruptive paradigm to design previously precluded compounds and nanomaterials. Despite these advances, the fi ...

Quasicrystals are aperiodically ordered structures with unconventional rotational symmetry. Their peculiar features have been explored in photonics to engineer bandgaps for light waves. Magnons (spin waves) are collective spin excitations in magnetically o ...

Electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to valuable chemicals is a highly promising route to close the carbon cycle. Herein, Zn catalysts derived from electrochemical reconstruction of ZnO materials are presented as efficient CO2-to-CO catalysts. We found that ...

Water splitting offers the opportunity for storing solar energy and, thus, producing carbon-neutral and renewable solar fuels. The process, known as artificial photosynthesis, is limited by the electrocatalytic conversion of water into molecular oxygen. El ...

Imbalance costs caused by forecasting errors are considerable for grid-connected wind farms. In order to reduce such costs, two onsite storage technologies, i.e., power-to-hydrogen-to-power and lithium battery, are investigated considering 14 uncertain tec ...

Production of methanol (MeOH) from CO2 is strongly desired as a key chemical feedstock and a fuel. However, the conventional process requires elevated temperature and pressure, and high temperature restricts the productivity of MeOH due to equilibrium limi ...

Affordable, stable and earth-abundant photo-electrochemical materials are indispensable for the large-scale implementation of sunlight-driven hydrogen production. Here we present an intrinsically stable and scalable solar water splitting device that is ful ...

We present femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy studies of time-resolved optical reflectivity of all-oxide YBa2Cu3O7/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (YBCO/LSMO) superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) bilayers consisting of a 100-nm-thick YBCO base layer and either 10 or 35 nm LSM ...

Infrared reflection and transmission as a function of temperature have been measured on single crystals of Cu3Bi(SeO3)(2)O2Cl. The complex dielectric function and optical properties along all three principal axes of the orthorhombic cell were obtained via ...

The electric field enhancement associated with detailed structure within novel optical antenna nanostructures is modeled using the surface integral equation technique in the context of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The antennae comprise random ...

In this thesis, steric effects in the dissociative chemisorption of quantum state-prepared methane on single crystal surfaces of nickel (Ni(100) and Ni(110)) are detected and quantified for the first time. Exploiting a new, continuous-wave, high-power, sin ...

Evolution of the neurochemical profile consisting of 19 metabolites after 30 mins of middle cerebral artery occlusion was longitudinally assessed at 3, 8 and 24 h in 6 to 8 mu L volumes in the striatum using localized H-1-magnetic resonance spectroscopy at ...

The homogeneous catalytic system, based on water-soluble ruthenium(II)– TPPTS catalyst (TPPTS = meta-trisulfonated triphenylphosphine), selectively decomposes HCOOH into H2 and CO2 in aqueous solution. Although this reaction results in only two gas product ...
