There are numerous ways to tackle the design optimization problem of inductive devices, being it a transformer or an inductor. The problem is generally nonlinear, nonconvex, and comprises a mix of continuous and discrete variables which makes it rather a d ...

The shift towards DC power distribution networks, enabled by power electronics technologies, is changing the nature of electrical power systems. Nowadays, DC power distribution networks can effectively support the high penetration of distributed energy res ...

The deployment of distributed photovoltaics (PV) in low-voltage networks may cause technical issues such as voltage rises, line ampacity violations, and transformer overloading for distribution system operators (DSOs). These problems may induce grid reinfo ...

This paper presents the historical development of the vertical extensions of unreinforced masonry buildings in the Eixample district of Barcelona and their impact on the seismic behaviour. Existing masonry buildings of Eixample present significant seismic ...

We present numerical simulations and experimental results of the self-modulation of a long proton bunch in a plasma with linear density gradients along the beam path. Simulation results agree with the experimental results reported [F. Braunmller, T. Nechae ...

The emergence of wide-band-gap (WBG) power transistors with low conduction losses and high-speed switching speeds has paved the way for more-than-ever efficient power electronics systems and huge energy saving potentials. Likewise, power density- the ratio ...

GaN-on-Si high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) exhibit excellent properties for efficient power conversion. Nevertheless, a considerable energy loss associated with the charging and discharging of the output capacitance (COSS) in these transistors se ...

Many engineering fields rely on frequency-domain dynamical systems for the mathematical modeling of physical (electrical/mechanical/etc.) structures. With the growing need for more accurate and reliable results, the computational burden incurred by frequen ...

Quality of the indoor environment has become an important parameter to account for in new and existing buildings due to the increasing number of people spending most of their time indoors. Generally, the design and evaluation of indoor environments in buil ...

Today's electrical grid is undergoing deep changes, resulting from the large integration of distributed Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in an effort to decarbonize the generation of electrical energy. In addition to the emergence of this volatile electricit ...

A novel type of iron conversion process has been recently developed to produce dense and adherent LaFeO3 perovskite coatings onto ferritic stainless steel surfaces by reaction with La2O3 dissolved in specially-formulated alkali molten carbonate baths. The ...

The transition towards more sustainable, fossil-free energy systems is interlinked with a high penetration of stochastic renewables, such as wind and solar. Integrating these new energy resources and technologies will lead to profound structural changes in ...

The thesis focuses on the study of the performance of TBMs in highly jointed and faulted rocks. Despite the great production rates recorded in favourable ground conditions, the TBM advance can be significantly slowed down in limiting geological situations ...

In this paper, we analyze the electric field at ground level during the first stage of triggered lightning experiments, i.e., during the rocket ascent and prior to the lightning initiation. At distances of some tens of meters from the triggering wire, the ...

The difference in total widths between the B-c(+) and B+ mesons is measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb experiment in 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy proton-proton collisions at the LH ...

Electrically tunable molecules are highly attractive for the construction of molecular devices, such as switches, transistors, or machines. Here, we present a novel nanomechanical element triggered by an electrical bias as external stimulus. We demonstrate ...

An unbalanced DC-link voltage regulation strategy is proposed for a three-level voltage source inverter used in the rotor cascade of a double-fed asynchronous motor-generator. The major problem in determining the presence of the unbalanced component is inv ...
