Although unsaturated and density-dependent flow affect solute fate in groundwater, they are rarely both included in reactive transport models. Using the operator-splitting method, a new reactive transport model (SUPHRE) was developed by combining a variabl ...

The kaolinite content is principally responsible for the durability performance of Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3), which calls into question its global applicability. The clay supply has a significant impact on the LC3 system's reduced carbon footpri ...

The objective of this study is to analyse the mechanical and durability properties of a high-performance mortars based on low grade kaolin clay and the effect of electrical conductivity and pore microstructure on the chloride penetration resistance. A tota ...

The use of clays as resource of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) for a new generation of low-carbon cements and concretes is currently the subject of intense research efforts. To this purpose, a large number of clay resources have been explored, ...

Opalinus Clay is the shale currently under investigation as the host formation for geological radioactive waste disposal in Switzerland. Its hydromechanical response has been widely studied, and the experimental results show a range of values whose dispers ...

Factors which could explain the slowing down of the metakaolin reaction in LC3 blends are investigated. Portlandite availability and the presence of aluminium ions in the pore solution are shown not to be limiting factors. ...

The complexity of the mechanics of active clays and, more generally, of geomaterials with clay minerals, under saturated and unsaturated conditions, still provides relevant scientific challenges today. Equally relevant challenges are the understanding of t ...

The adoption of blended cements to reduce the carbon footprint has increased significantly over the last decades. Clays containing kaolinite are a promising choice due to their widespread availability. Kaolinite content is the major factor controlling the ...

Presently, environmental issues are considered as critical aspects concerning the market competitiveness in the building and construction sector. However, the construction sector is regarded as one of the main areas contributing to CO2 emissions and resour ...

This paper examines the possibility of the use of some clays calcined from Nigeria as partial substitutes for clinker in the production of Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3). The clays were calcined in the oven at a temperature of 800 degrees C and for o ...

Limestone calcined clay cements (LC3) are blended cements that combine clinker, limestone, calcined clay and gypsum. The availability of the materials required to produce LC3 and the good performance that it achieves, makes LC3 suitable as a sustainable re ...

The paper presents the results of an experimental research devoted to investigate the response to suction variations of a scaly clay in compacted and reconstituted conditions. Different experimental techniques (axis translation, vapour equilibrium, dew poi ...

Shales are sedimentary formation currently studied for their involvement in many geo-energy related applications, such as radioactive waste disposal, CO2 sequestration, oil and gas extraction. In Switzerland the Opalinus Clay shale has been selected has ho ...

This paper details the main factors influencing the performance of limestone calcined clay cements (LC3). The kaolinite content plays a major role in the rheological properties as well as strength development. Even in the presence of secondary phases, kaol ...

In this study, the C-A-S-H composition, morphology and density are characterized for Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3-50) blends containing clays with various kaolinite contents. Significant incorporation of aluminium is observed for LC3-50 blends compa ...

In Switzerland, Opalinus Clay shale has been selected as the host formation for radioactive waste disposal. The minimum required depth of the repository is related to the long-lasting isolation required for the disposal (1 million years). During this perio ...

Opalinus Clay is the selected host geomaterial for the construction of underground geological disposals for radioactive waste in Switzerland. The formation has been studied in several sites, i.e. the Mont Terri laboratory, and several boreholes in the nort ...

The use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) to lower the clinker factor of cements is now commonplace, for it benefits performance, economics and ecology. This thesis focuses on ternary blends of limestone and calcined kaolinitic clays, two very ...

The durability of mortar and paste mixtures with respect to chloride ion ingress was investigated for binary blends of Portland Cement Calcined Clay, and ternary systems of Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3). Five clays from various sources with differen ...

Corrosion of metal reinforcement is the most important durability concern of concrete infrastructures. In this research, chloride transport in mortars prepared using ternary blends of OPC-calcined clay-limestone (LC3) as the cementitious materials is asses ...
