Under the umbrella of smart toys, a myriad of interactive systems have addressed a variety of scenarios considering entertainment, education, sustainability, social and environmental learning through play. Tangibles and small toy robots prevail; but intera ...

The implementation of non-user-centered design is sometimes effective for traditionally mass-produced items; however, these methods do not take into account local needs, resources, and cultures, and the history of individual people and communities in low- ...

Perceiving humans in the context of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) often relies on multiple cameras or expensive LiDAR sensors. In this work, we present a new cost-effective vision-based method that perceives humans' locations in 3D and their bod ...

We address the detection, tracking, and relative localization of the agents of a drone swarm from a human perspective using a headset equipped with a single camera and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). We train and deploy a deep neural network detector o ...

Modern information technologies and human-centric communication systems employ advanced content representations for richer portrayals of the real world. The newly adopted imaging modalities offer additional information cues and permit the depiction of real ...

Augmented/virtual realities (ARs/VRs) promise to revolutionize STEM education. However, most easy-to-use tools are limited to static visualizations, which limits the approachable content, whereas more interactive and dynamic alternatives require costly har ...

LiftPose3D infers three-dimensional poses from two-dimensional data or from limited three-dimensional data. The approach is illustrated for videos of behaving Drosophila, mice, rats and macaques. ...

At the core of the contribution of this dissertation there is an augmented reality (AR) environment, StaticAR, that supports the process of learning the fundamentals of statics in vocational classrooms, particularly in carpentry ones. Vocational apprentice ...

The standard cameras are designed to truthfully mimic the human eye and the visual system. In recent years, commercially available cameras are becoming more complex, and offer higher image resolutions than ever before. However, the quality of conventional ...
