Although graphene has met many of its initially predicted optoelectronic, thermal, and mechanical properties, photodetectors with large spectral bandwidths and extremely high frequency responses remain outstanding. In this work, we demonstrate a >500 gigah ...

Permeability measurements of engineering textiles exhibit large variability as no standardization method currently exists; numerical permeability prediction is thus an attractive alternative. It has all advantages of virtual material characterization, incl ...

The out-of-plane permeability of two glass fibre fabrics was measured by 26 institutions using silicone oil as a test fluid. Participants in this study were free to select the test procedure, specimen dimensions and data analysis method, provided that test ...

Climate change will have both quantitative and qualitative effects on groundwater resources. These impacts differ for aquifers in solid and unconsolidated rock, in urban or rural locations, and in the principal processes of groundwater recharge. Having kno ...

High-permeance, molecular-sieving, nanoporous single-layer graphene (NSLG) membranes are highly promising for gas separation. However, the formation of cracks during the transfer of NSLG to a low-cost porous support is difficult to avoid. These cracks are ...

The occurrence of macropores in salt marsh sediments is a natural and ubiquitous phenomenon. Although they are widely assumed to affect pore-water flow in salt marshes significantly, the mechanisms involved and their extent are not well understood. We cond ...

We investigate cloaking property of negative-index metamaterials in the time-harmonic electromagnetic setting for the so-called doubly complementary media. These are media consisting of negative-index metamaterials in a shell (plasmonic structure) and posi ...

Recent advances in designing time-reversal-invariant photonic topological insulators have been extended down to the deep subwavelength scale, by employing synthetic photonic matter made of dense periodic arrangements of subwavelength resonant scatterers. I ...

We investigate the invisibility via anomalous localized resonance of a general source in anisotropic media for electromagnetic waves. To this end, we first introduce the concept of doubly complementary media in the electromagnetic setting. These are media ...

The thermal drawing process is emerging as a versatile platform for the development of multimaterial fiber devices and advanced textiles for sensing, energy harvesting or medical applications, owing to the possibility to integrate insulators, conductors an ...

In this work, we design and experimentally demonstrate in the microwave range a robust metamaterial waveguide, which is formed at the boundary between two locally resonant chiral metamaterials with opposite chirality. We show that the interface states at s ...

Surfactants offer a tunable approach for modulating the exposed surface area of a nanoparticle. They further present a scalable and cost-effective means for suspending single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which have demonstrated practical use as fluore ...

Flow properties are investigated for a non-crimp glass fabric with large meso-channels designed for high-permeability, as compared to glass twill woven fabric. Saturated and unsaturated permeability are measured through in-plane, unidirectional, constant-p ...

Continuous fiber thermoplastic composites are potential substitutes of steel in structural automotive components, since they combine fiber strength and rigidity with ductility, potential recyclability and low density of the thermoplastic (TP) matrix. Resin ...

In-plane permeability of textile fabrics is often characterized by one-dimensional rectilinear flow experiments, displaying limitations related to potential race-tracking effects and the need to run experiments at several fiber volume fractions. We propose ...

Water flooding of cathodic gas diffusion layers (GDLs) in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells at high current densities or low temperatures limits efficient operation due to disturbed transport of reactants to the catalytic sites or products away into the ...

Experimental determination of water permeability in unsaturated conditions is a critical issue. Among the existing experimental techniques, the instantaneous profile method is frequently used. When applied to bentonite-based materials, the method often sho ...

We investigated the effect of rigid spherical inclusions such as microcapsules and fillers on the permeability of fabrics by using glass beads as model inclusions. Beads with a range of diameters (40-800 mu m) and volume fractions (2.5-10%) were sieved bet ...

The objective of this thesis is to develop efficient numerical schemes to successfully tackle problems arising from the study of groundwater flows in a porous saturated medium; we deal therefore with partial differential equations(PDE) having random coeffi ...

This thesis explores the applications of graphene for terahertz and far infrared optical components and antennas, with particular emphasis on tunable and non-reciprocal devices. Both terahertz technologies and graphene are emerging fields which hold many p ...
