This work presents a system upgrade of the High Resolution Thomson Scattering (HRTS) diagnostic [Pasqualotto et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 75, 3891-3893 (2004)] on JET that allows it to measure low temperature (1-500 eV) plasma pre- and post-Thermal quench (T ...

Bond between reinforcing bars and concrete has been the focus of extensive research over the last century. This is well-justified as the functioning of reinforced concrete intimately depends on the interaction between rebar and concrete, as for example cra ...

The first Panel Element Tester was conceived by Vecchio and Collins at the University of Toronto in the late 1970s. This apparatus allows for the mechanical testing of concrete elements under combined in-plane normal and shear stresses and provided importa ...

Thin-ply composites, obtained with recently developed fiber spreading techniques, rapidly gained industrial interest because they offer a large composite design freedom, and lead to a composite tensile strength that is close to that of the individual fiber ...

The images show two different and complementary views of a mixture of Light Expanded Clay Aggregate (LECA) particles with size ranging between 0.25–1.0 mm. The upper-left is a SEM image showing a projected view of the particles, while the lower-left is a s ...

Aggregate interlocking allows transferring shear and normal stresses through open cracks, and is considered to significantly contribute to the force transfer in cracked concrete. The complex phenomenon depends on the roughness of cracked surfaces, where ma ...

This paper sets out to review the current state of the art in applying self-healing/self-repair to high-performing advanced fiber-reinforced polymer composite materials (FRPs). A significant proportion of self-healing studies have focused so far on develop ...

In this paper, a model to analyze the propagation of intentional electromagnetic interferences disturbances along penetrating conductors into concrete walls is proposed. The model is based on the transmission line theory and considers the attenuation of th ...

We report the development of an intrinsic healing glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite based on a disulphide-containing organic-inorganic thermoset matrix. Thermomechanical experiments showed that the newly developed matrix has a combination of ...

Hypothesis: We hypothesized that biomechanical parameters typically associated with glenoid implant failure after anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA) would be correlated with preoperative glenoid bone quality. Methods: We developed an objective aut ...

This paper discusses an analytical study that quantifies the expected earthquake-induced losses in typical office steel frame buildings designed with perimeter special moment frames in highly seismic regions. It is shown that for seismic events associated ...

Damage to structural walls in the recent earthquakes in Chile (2010) and New Zealand (2011) demonstrated that modern reinforced concrete (RC) walls may not achieve the expected ductile response but could possibly be triggered by out-of-plane displacements ...

Recent robots target safety, reconfigurability and interactivity by addressing the “softness” of the hardware either by endowing additional degrees-of-freedom or through inherent compliancy. These robots require distributed sensing with flexibility and sof ...

Carbon nanotubes with unique physical and mechanical properties have shown great potential for biological applications, including tissue engineering and mimicking the structure and properties of human bones. In the present work, sol-gel synthesized nanocom ...

A series of fatigue experiments was performed in order to investigate the effect of the R-ratio on the fatigue/fracture behavior of adhesively-bonded pultruded GFRP double cantilever beam joints. Constant amplitude fatigue experiments were carried out unde ...

Ferroelectric ceramic – polymer composites have a unique mix of electrical and mechanical properties. Piezoelectric and pyroelectric activity, a wide range of dielectric constants and high breakdown strength are combined with mechanical flexibility, formab ...

Genetic programming is used in this paper for modeling the fatigue life of several fiber-reinforced composite material systems. It is shown that if the genetic programming tool is adequately trained, it can produce theoretical predictions that compare favo ...

Monodispersed Pd-nanoparticles (similar to 8nm) prepared via a modified microemulsion method were deposited on active carbon fibers (ACF) fabrics and studied in a semi-batch 1-hexyne liquid-phase hydrogenation. The catalyst Pd(0.45 wt%)/ACF demonstrated > ...

Synchrotron‐based X‐ray Tomographic Microscopy (SRXTM) is nowadays a powerful technique for non‐destructive, high‐resolution investigations of a broad kind of materials. High‐brilliance and high‐coherence third generation synchrotron radiation facilities a ...
