In this thesis, we exploited optical and X-ray pump-probe methods in a synergistic approach to study the interplay of the electronic, spin and structural degrees of freedom in two class of complex systems relevant for solar energy conversion applications: ...

The intrinsic low sensitivity of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments limits their utility for structure determination of materials. Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) under magic angle spinning (MAS) has shown tremendous potential to overcome this ...

Electronic nearsightedness is one of the fundamental principles that governs the behavior of condensed matter and supports its description in terms of local entities such as chemical bonds. Locality also underlies the tremendous success of machine-learning ...

When a nanoparticle is irradiated by an intense laser pulse, it turns into a nanoplasma, a transition that is accompanied by many interesting nonequilibrium dynamics. So far, most experiments on nanoplasmas use ion measurements, reflecting the outside dyna ...

We present a comprehensive review of methods and applications of molecular simulations of interfacial systems. We give a detailed overview of the main techniques and major challenges in the following aspects of solid and fluid surfaces: adsorption at solid ...

In a joint effort utilizing modified sample preparation, microscopy, X-ray diffraction and micro-fabrication, it became possible to prepare single crystals of the "hidden" phase AlCr2. High-resolution X-ray diffraction analysis is described in detail for t ...

Surface characterization of plasma-treated seeds has made significant progress over the last decade. Most papers in the literature use scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle goniometry to investigate surface modifications. However, very few p ...

Supported Pd-based catalysts used in heterogeneously catalyzed liquid phase processes often undergo an activation step through reduction of the oxide phase or of the oxidic passivation layer prior to reaction. An oxidized Pd/Al2O3 catalyst was reduced by u ...

The electrochemical reduction of CO2 to ethylene provides a carbon-neutral avenue for the conversion of CO2 to value-added fuels and feedstocks, so contributing to the storage of intermittent renewable electricity. The exploration of efficient electrocatal ...

Water is the matrix of life and serves as a solvent for numerous physical and chemical processes. The origins of the nature of inhomogeneities that exist in liquid water and the time scales over which they occur remains an open question. Here, we report fe ...

The study provides new evidence for Ag-coated polyester (PES) mediating Escherichia colt inactivation by way of genetically engineered E. coli (without porins, from now denoted porinless bacteria). This allows the quantification of the bactericidal kinetic ...

Optical metasurfaces rely on subwavelength scale nanostructures, which puts significant constraints on nanofabrication accuracies. These constraints are becoming increasingly important, as metasurfaces are maturing toward real applications that require the ...

In this work, Li-rich Li1.2Mn0.43+Mnx4+Ti0.4-xO2 (LMMxTO, 0

The chemistry of divalent lanthanides has generated increasing interest in the past years due to their redox properties and unique reaction pathways. Notably, molecular complexes of low-valent lanthanides have been shown to be suitable one-electron reducta ...

Potassium chromium jarosite, KCr3(OH)(6)(SO4)(2) (Cr-jarosite), is considered a promising candidate to display spin liquid behavior due to the strong magnetic frustration imposed by the crystal structure. However, the ground state magnetic properties have ...

In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful technique for the investigation of heterogeneous catalysts and electrocatalysts. The obtained XAS spectra are usually interpreted from the point of view of the investigated chemical processes, there ...

The bidentate carboxamide ligand N-(thiazole-2-yl) picolinamide (LH) was synthesized in the environmentally friendly ionic liquid TBAB, and the five-coordinated Cu-II-complex, [Cu(L)(2)(H2O)]center dot CHCl3 (1) was synthesized from LH and copper(II)acetat ...

In this article we revisit our recent picosecond and femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) experiments, probing the ultrafast electronic and geometric evolution of photoexcited haem proteins, namely ferrous N ...

With the advent of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) time-resolved X-ray spectroscopic techniques have advanced to the femtosecond regime. These are element selective techniques which offer unique insight into the electronic and chemical environment and d ...

Inkjet printing technology was employed for the application of protective layer coatings in SOFC metallic interconnects. Aqueous-based spinel coatings were inkjet-printed on standard and surface nitrided K41 ferritic stainless-steel substrates. Inkjet-prin ...
