This paper introduces a distributed operational solution for integrated transmission-distribution (ITD) system management. A fundamental challenge in designing distributed approaches for AC optimal power flow (OPF) problems in ITD systems is the nonconvexi ...

Time-sensitive networks provide worst-case guarantees for applications in domains such as the automobile, automation, avionics, and the space industries. A violation of these guarantees can cause considerable financial loss and serious damage to human live ...

Time-sensitive networks, as in the context of IEEE Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) and IETF Deterministic Networking (DetNet), offer deterministic services with guaranteed bounded latency in order to support safety-critical applications. In this thesis, we ...

In-network devices around the world monitor and tamper with connections for many reasons, including intrusion prevention, combating spam or phishing, and country-level censorship. Connection tampering seeks to block access to specific domain names or keywo ...

An important initial step in fault detection for complex industrial systems is gaining an understanding of their health condition. Subsequently, continuous monitoring of this health condition becomes crucial to observe its evolution, track changes over tim ...

In 1948, Claude Shannon laid the foundations of information theory, which grew out of a study to find the ultimate limits of source compression, and of reliable communication. Since then, information theory has proved itself not only as a quest to find the ...

This work addresses the problem of learning the topology of a network from the signals emitted by the network nodes. These signals are generated over time through a linear diffusion process, where neighboring nodes exchange messages according to the underl ...

Decentralized learning (DL) has gained prominence for its potential benefits in terms of scalability, privacy, and fault tolerance. It consists of many nodes that coordinate without a central server and exchange millions of parameters in the inherently ite ...

Dampers are devices that reduce delay jitter in the context of time-sensitive networks, by delaying packets for the amount written in packet headers. Jitter reduction is required by some real-time applications; beyond this, dampers have the potential to so ...

Decentralized signal control of congested traffic networks based on the Max-Pressure (MP) controller is theoretically proven to maximize throughput, stabilize the system and balance queues for single intersections under specific conditions. However, its pe ...

Traffic congestion constitutes one of the most frequent, yet challenging, problems to address in the urban space. Caused by the concentration of population, whose mobility needs surpass the serving capacity of urban networks, congestion cannot be resolved ...

We study the cooperative data exchange problem for fully connected networks. In this problem, nodes make broadcast transmissions to recover a file consisting of K independent packets. Each node initially only possesses a subset of the packets. We propose ( ...

This work investigates the benefits of a two-layer adaptive signal control framework combining multi-region perimeter control (PC) with distributed Max Pressure (MP) control in selected network intersections. Motivated by MP’s questionable performance in o ...

Weighted Round-Robin (WRR) is often used, due to its simplicity, for scheduling packets or tasks. With WRR, a number of packets equal to the weight allocated to a flow can be served consecutively, which leads to a bursty service. Interleaved Weighted Round ...

Long Range (LoRa) is an emerging low-power wide-area network technology offering long-range wireless connectivity to Internet of Things (IoT) devices. For energy efficiency reasons, LoRa end nodes implement a nonslotted ALOHA multiple access scheme to tran ...

We present six new time-delay measurements obtained from Rc-band monitoring data acquired at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPIA) 2.2m telescope at La Silla observatory between October 2016 and February 2020. The lensed quasars HE0047 1756, WG0 ...

We study causality in gravitational systems beyond the classical limit. Using on-shell methods, we consider the 1-loop corrections from charged particles to the photon energy-momentum tensor - the self-stress - that controls the quantum interaction between ...

Although encryption hides the content of communications from third parties, metadata, i.e., the information attached to the content (such as the size or timing of communication) can be a rich source of details and context. In this dissertation, we demonstr ...

In this thesis, we developed a research direction that combines the theoretical concepts of complex networks with practical needs and applications in the field of transportation engineering. As a first objective we analyzed the phenomenon of congestion pr ...

Flow reshaping is used in time-sensitive networks (as in the context of IEEE TSN and IETF Detnet) in order to reduce burstiness inside the network and to support the computation of guaranteed latency bounds. This is performed using per-flow regulators (suc ...
