The objective of this study was to determine the normative bone mineral density (BMD) of cortical and trabecular bone regions in the adult glenoid and its dependence on the subject's age and sex. We analyzed computed tomography (CT) scans of 441 shoulders ...

Bone marrow adipocytes (BMAds) constitute the most abundant stromal component of adult human bone marrow. Two subtypes of BMAds have been described, the more labile regulated adipocytes (rBMAds) and the more stable constitutive adipocytes (cBMAds), which d ...

Objective This study explored the impact of time-restricted eating (TRE) versus standard dietary advice (SDA) on bone health. Methods Adults with >= 1 component of metabolic syndrome were randomized to TRE (ad libitum eating within 12 hours) or SDA (food p ...

Current research of designing prosthetic robotic hands mainly focuses on improving their functionality by devising new mechanical structures and actuation systems. Most of existing work relies on a single structure/system (e.g., bone-only or tissue-only) a ...

Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Cells (HSPCs) reside in their niche, a structure that regulates the balance of cellular quiescence, self-renewal and commitment towards differentiated cells. This highly plastic niche is formed by several cellular players, ...

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been demonstrated to be highly effective in the field of pulmonary nodule detection. However, existing CNN based pulmonary nodule detection methods lack the ability to capture long-range dependencies, which is vita ...

Glenohumeral osteoarthritis is a degenerative shoulder joint disease, which causes the breakdown of articular cartilage and bone. People affected by this disease suffer from severe pain and eventually reduced mobility and poor life quality. This disease is ...

The limitations and potential complications correlated with autogenous bone grafts have raised interest in the development of synthetic bone graft substitutes. ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) is one of the most promising materials for synthetic bone graft s ...

A mechanistic understanding of bone fracture is indispensable for developing improved fracture risk assessment in clinics. Since bone is a hierarchically structured material, gaining such knowledge requires analysis at multiple length scales. Here, the ten ...

To comprehend the most detrimental characteristics behind bone fractures, it is key to understand the material and tissue level strain limits and their relation to failure sites. The aim of this study was to investigate the three-dimensional strain distrib ...

The bone marrow (BM) exists heterogeneously as hematopoietic/red or adipocytic/yellow marrow depending on skeletal location, age, and physiological condition. Mouse models and patients undergoing radio/chemotherapy or suffering acute BM failure endure rapi ...

Objective: In this paper, a new vibrational modal analysis technique was developed for intraoperative cementless prosthesis fixation evaluation upon hammering. Methods: An artificial bone (Sawbones)-prosthesis system was excited by sweeping of a sine signa ...

The treatment of bone defects with recombinant bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) requires high doses precluding broad clinical application. Here, a bioengineering approach is presented that strongly improves low-dose BMP-2-based bone regeneration by mob ...

The outstanding physico-chemical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) applied to rectify the problems in bone tissue engineering through enhancing cell proliferation, adhesion and viability, which lead to the improvement in bone replacement, growth and he ...

Introduction: The olecranon Chevron osteotomy (OCO) is commonly used to approach complex intraarticular fractures of the distal humerus. Predrilled tension band wiring (TBW) has historically been used to fix OCO. However, clinical outcomes are burdened by ...

Physiological evidence suggests that neighboring brain regions have similar perfusion characteristics (vascular supply, collateral blood flow). It is largely unknown whether integrating perfusion CT (pCT) information from the area surrounding a given voxel ...

Objective: To test whether subchondral bone mineral density (sBMD) and cartilage thickness (CTh) of femoral condyles are correlated in knees without and with severe medial femorotibial osteoarthritis (OA), using a subregional analysis with computerized tom ...

The bone marrow (BM) microenvironment, or niche, significantly affects behaviors of its resident stem cell populations. Disruptions in the BM niche contribute to a number of severe clinical pathologies. Discovery of novel therapeutic strategies for BM-rela ...

Imaging the inner ear microanatomy is of great importance for the assessment of the state of the cells responsible for sound detection. Hearing disorders are mainly due to a malfunction of the cochlea, the bone containing the cells inside the inner ear. Un ...

Dual contrast micro computed tomography (CT) shows potential for detecting articular cartilage degeneration. However, the performance of conventional CT systems is limited by beam hardening, low image resolution (full-body CT), and long acquisition times ( ...
