The EU FASTGRID project aimed at improving the REBCO conductor in order to enhance its economical attractiveness for the Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL). Two approaches were simultaneously investigated: i) the reduction of the tape length thro ...

Providing an additional degree of freedom for binary information encoding and nonreciprocal information transmission, chiral single photons have become a new research frontier in quantum optics. Without using complex external conditions (e.g., magnetic fie ...

Geological faults movements generating earthquakes, a vehicles' tyres rolling on the pavement, and a chalk writing on a blackboard are all different examples of frictional systems. In these systems, which are everywhere around us, two separate bodies are i ...

The use of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations has led to promising results to unravel the atomistic origins of adhesive wear, and in particular for the onset of wear at nanoscale surface asperities. However, MD simulations come with a high computational c ...

Photon radiotherapy is a common tool in the armory against tumors, but it is limited by hypoxia-related radioresistance of tumors and radiotoxicity to normal tissues. Here, we constructed a spatiotemporally controlled synergistic therapy platform based on ...

Adhesion between two bodies is a key parameter in wear processes. At the macroscale, strong adhesive bonds are known to lead to high wear rates, as observed in clean metal-on-metal contact. Reducing the strength of the interfacial adhesion is then desirabl ...

This work reports on the tribocorrosion properties of a CoCrMo alloy sliding under imposed passive potential against alumina in sulfuric acid-glycerol mixtures exhibiting different viscosities and thus, in principle, lubrication properties. As expected, we ...

The wear volume is known to keep increasing during frictional processes, and Archard notably proposed a model to describe the probability of wear particle formation upon asperity collision in a two-body contact configuration. While this model is largely ad ...

Ni-P electroless coatings are widely applied for protection of magnesium alloys and other materials due to the low energy consumption of the process and high resistance to corrosion and wear, properties that can be improved with the incorporation of partic ...

Tribocorrosion, as the interaction between mechanical wear and electrochemical corrosion, has been found to be the main problem causing the failure and limiting the lifetime of metal-on-metal artificial hip joints. Better understanding of the tribocorrosio ...

The structural superlubricity (SSL), a state of near-zero friction between two contacted solid surfaces, has been attracting rapidly increasing research interest since itwas realized in microscale graphite in 2012. An obvious question concerns the implicat ...

In this work, we revisit experimentally and theoretically the mechanics of a tape loop. Using primarily elastic materials (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS, or polycarbonate, PC) and confocal microscopy, we monitor the shape as well as the applied forces during ...

We present a facile molecular-level interface engineering strategy to augment the long-term operational and thermal stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by tailoring the interface between the perovskite and hole transporting layer (HTL) with a multif ...

Electronic micro and nano-devices are suitable tools to monitor the activity of many individual neurons over mesoscale networks. However the inorganic materials currently used in microelectronics are barely accepted by neural cells and tissues, thus limiti ...

Tribocorrosion behaviour of pure titanium in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) solution has been investigated systematically as a function of surface chemistry and bovine serum albumin (BSA) content in the solution. A ball-on-disk tribometer coupled with an el ...
