Electrochromic windows allow for an improved management of solar heat gains in buildings and enhanced visual comfort of building users. All-solid-state electrochromic devices can be especially durable. During their fabrication lithium has to be inserted, p ...

The appearance of objects is governed by how they reflect, transmit and absorb the light they receive. That, in turn, depends on the material's internal structure, surface structure, and viewing and illumination directions. Changes in those characteristics ...

The accurate measurement of reflectance and transmittance properties of materials is essential in the printing and display industries in order to ensure precise color reproduction. In comparison with reflectance measurement, where the impact of different g ...

Photocatalytic antibacterial sol-gel coated substrates have been reported to kill bacteria under light or in the dark. These coatings showed non-uniform distribution, poor adhesion to the substrate and short effective lifetime as antibacterial surfaces. Th ...

In order to modulate the solar gains of a building, electrochromic windows can be used. To improve their durability, inorganic solid state electrolytes are considered. This work reports on the investigation of tungsten trioxide (WO3) and lithium phosphorou ...

In this work, we study MgF2 thin-film synthesis by reactive pulsed DC magnetron sputtering from a metallic magnesium target in a gas mixture of argon, oxygen, and carbon tetrafluoride (CF4). Nanocrystalline films on silicon and glass substrates with excell ...

The first section of the thesis discusses the development and implementation of a two dimensional Fourier transform spectroscopy setup, that permits the recording of electronic 2D spectra in the visible regime. A hollow core fiber was used to generate broa ...

This project investigates the light transmittance of load-bearing glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) laminates with a view to two architectural applications: the daylighting of buildings through load-bearing translucent GFRP envelopes and encapsulation ...

Semiconductor photoelectrodes for water oxidation that absorb visible light usually have poor electronic transport properties and small optical absorption coefficients near their absorption edge. Therefore, innovative designs that lead to significant optic ...

A difunctional cycloaliphatic epoxy monomer was cationically photo-polymerized in the presence of a diaryliodonium salt photoinitiator and an isopropyl thioxanthone photosensitizer at different temperatures and UV intensities. The photo-polymerization kine ...

The present thesis deals with luminescent compounds based on lanthanide complexes that are suitable for color reproduction and optical document security with invisible luminescent inks. This thesis is divided in two distinct fields: chemistry, which produc ...

The colors in a digital image do not only depend on the scene's reflectances, but also on the lighting conditions and on the characteristics of the imaging device. It is often necessary to separate the influence of these three elements, in particular to se ...

The color of prints is mainly determined by the light absorption of the inks deposited on top of paper. In order to predict the reflectance spectrum of prints, we use a spectral prediction model in which each ink is characterized by its spectral transmitta ...

The color of materials such as paints, prints and glass may be characterized by a reflectance or a transmittance spectrum. Modeling their reflectance and their transmittance requires describing the interaction of light, from the light source to the observe ...

In this study, we present a radiative-transfer model to simulate reflectance and transmittance of light by soil slabs. The radiative-transfer model implemented, referred to as the beam-tracing model, uses cross-sectional images of scattering media to descr ...

Two methods for measuring the optical properties of tissue, i.e. reduced scattering and absorption coefficient, were developed. The first one was designed for in vitro investigations. It is based on the measurement of the spatially resolved transmittance t ...
