Miniaturization has been at the forefront of scientific research in the past decade covering diverse areas such as electronics, mechanics, and optics. While 'small is beautiful' may be a vast generalization, the true benefits of miniaturization are especia ...

The synthesis of ultralow-noise microwaves is of both scientific and technological relevance for timing, metrology, communications and radio-astronomy. Today, the lowest reported phase noise signals are obtained via optical frequency-division using mode-lo ...

With optical spectral marks equally spaced by a frequency in the microwave or the radio frequency domain, optical frequency combs have been used not only to synthesize optical frequencies from microwave references but also to generate ultralow-noise microw ...

Optical frequency combs have the potential to become key building blocks of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) communication systems. The strictly equidistant narrow-band spectral lines of a frequency comb can serve either as carriers for parallel WDM ...

Resonant and non-resonant effects in few-mode fibers have found use in versatile devices. From sensing perspective, extensive research has been done on fringe sensitivity of nonresonant two-mode interference. Resonant mode converter gratings are promising ...

Optical-frequency combs, that is spectra of equidistant coherent optical lines, have revolutionized the precision measurements of time and frequency. In 2007 a new method to generate optical frequency combs was discovered. In contrast to conventional gener ...

Many molecule bonds have vibration frequencies in the mid-infrared band. Thus, this band is of great interest to molecular spectroscopy, material processing and medical applications. However, many optical materials typically used for laser sources experien ...

The integration of conducting and semiconducting architectures within thermally drawn thin and flexible fibers is emerging as a versatile platform for smart sensors and imaging systems, medical and biological probes, energy harvesting and advanced textile. ...

We report a low-power 4-channel NRZ optical RX including a digital burst-mode CDR measured up to 40Gb/s/lane in 14nm CMOS. The RX, designed for 850nm VCSEL based optical links, can wake-up and achieve phase-lock in 8ns at BER

We demonstrate an active random fiber laser by directly pumping a 100 m erbium-doped fiber at 980 nm wavelength, with a fiber loop mirror forming a half-open cavity. Random lasing with competing spectral modes in the range from 1535 nm to 1560 nm is achiev ...

Self-referencing turns pulsed laser systems into self-referenced frequency combs. Such frequency combs allow counting of optical frequencies and have a wide range of applications. The required optical bandwidth to implement self-referencing is typically ob ...

Solitons are waveforms that preserve their shape while propagating, as a result of a balance of dispersion and nonlinearity(1,2). Soliton-based data transmission schemes were investigated in the 1980s and showed promise as a way of overcoming the limitatio ...

We present first dual-wavelength all-fiber laser, based on isolator-free theta cavity with two fiber Bragg mirrors and thulium- and holmium-doped fibers. Laser provides 350mW total power with 8% slope efficiency, and linewidth less than 01.mm. ...

The persistent growth of interest in the middle infrared (MIR) is stimulating the development of sources and components. Novel waveguides and fibers for the efficient use of nonlinear effects in the MIR are being intensively studied. Highly nonlinear silic ...

The mid-infrared part of the optical spectrum is of high interest in a wide range of applications such as environmental gas monitoring, contaminant detection in the chemical, food or pharmaceutical industry, medical diagnosis, or defense and security. Rele ...
