In the last few years, stroke ranked as the second most common cause of death and is the third most significant condition affecting disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) worldwide. Being the most prevalent and quality of life impacting post-stroke symptom ...

Objective. Artificial vision has been and still is the subject of intense research. The ultimate goal is to help blind people in their daily life. Approaches to artificial vision, including visual prostheses and optogenetics, have strongly focused on resto ...

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe, validate, and compare the contrast sensitivity functions (CSFs) acquired with the novel quick CSF (qCSF) method from patients with early and intermediate age-related macular degeneration (eAMD and iAMD) a ...

Over the last decades, implantable neural interfaces have been extensively explored and effectively deployed to address neurological and mental health disorders. The existing solutions present several limitations. Firstly, the physical size of the implanta ...

Introduction Recent work has shown an association between cognitive and visual impairments and two main theories were advanced, namely the sensory deprivation and the common cause theories. Most studies considered only basic visual functions such as visual ...

Humans can rapidly estimate the statistical properties of groups of stimuli, including their average and variability. But recent studies of so-called Feature Distribution Learning (FDL) have shown that observers can quickly learn even more complex aspects ...

Motor skill acquisition is essential to our survival, as it enables an efficient interaction with the changing world around us. The acquisition of novel sequential tasks, of particular relevance due to their pervasiveness in everyday life activities, can b ...

The relationship between age-related changes in brain structural connectivity (SC) and functional connectivity (FC) with cognition is not well understood. Furthermore, it is not clear whether cognition is represented via a similar spatial pattern of FC and ...

It is unknown whether visual memory capacity can develop if onset of pattern vision is delayed for several years following birth. We had an opportunity to address this question through our work with an unusual population of 12 congenitally blind individual ...

Often, we intuitively assume that there are common factors in life. For example, we test people with a visual acuity test to determine whether they are allowed to drive a car or not- with the implicit assumption that the acuity test is representative of vi ...

In studies of the visual system as well as in computer vision, the focus is often on contrast edges. However, the primate visual system contains a large number of cells that are insensitive to spatial contrast and, instead, respond to uniform homogeneous i ...

Common factors are omnipresent in everyday life, e.g., people who do well in one cognitive test are likely to perform well in other cognitive tests as well, and vice versa. In vision, however, there seems to be a multitude of specific factors rather than a ...

Human vision has evolved to make sense of a world in which elements almost never appear in isolation. Surprisingly, the recognition of an element in a visual scene is strongly limited by the presence of other nearby elements, a phenomenon known as visual c ...

Visual processing can be seen as the integration and segmentation of features. Objects are composed of contours, integrated into shapes and segmented from other contours. Information also needs to be integrated to solve the ill-posed problems of vision. Fo ...

Vision scientists have tried to classify illusions for more than a century. For example, some studies suggested that there is a unique common factor for all visual illusions. Other studies proposed that there are several subclasses of illusions, such as il ...

Loss of mitochondrial function and proteostasis typify aging and age-associated degenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and muscle aging. To date, no cure or preventive measure is available to manage these conditions. Alterations of cellular pro ...

Classically, vision is seen as a cascade of local, feedforward computations. This framework has been tremendously successful, inspiring a wide range of ground-breaking findings in neuroscience and computer vision. Recently, feedforward Convolutional Neural ...

The early visual system is organized retinotopically. However, under ecological viewing conditions, motion perception occurs in non-retinotopic coordinates. Even though many studies revealed the central role of nonretinotopic processes, very little is know ...

The conceptual evolution of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD(+)) from being seen as a simple metabolic cofactor to a pivotal cosubstrate for proteins regulating metabolism and longevity, including the sirtuin family of protein deacylases, has led to ...

Schizophrenia (SCZ) patients show deficits in many domains, including cognition and perception. However, results are often mixed. One reason for mixed results may be differences in medication. Very little is known about the role of medication in visual pro ...
