Mechanical watches are generally regulated by a balance and a spring constituting a harmonic oscillator. This mechanism is intrinsically force-balanced, which makes it essentially insensitive to gravity as well as to the linear accelerations of the watch. ...

We investigate the magnetic structure and magnetoelectric(ME) effect in the high -field phase of the antiferromagnet LiFePO 4 above the critical field of 31 T. A neutron diffraction study in pulsed magnetic fields reveals the propagation vector to be q = 0 ...

The flywheel is a widespread mechanical component used for the storage of kinetic energy and angular momentum. It typically consists of cylindrical inertia rotating about its axis on rolling bearings, which involves undesired friction, lubrication, and wea ...

In this thesis, we propose and analyze novel numerical algorithms for solving three different high-dimensional problems involving tensors. The commonality of these problems is that the tensors can potentially be well approximated in low-rank formats. Ident ...

A rank-adaptive integrator for the approximate solution of high-order tensor differential equations by tree tensor networks is proposed and analyzed. In a recursion from the leaves to the root, the integrator updates bases and then evolves connection tenso ...

Tensor trains are a versatile tool to compress and work with high-dimensional data and functions. In this work we introduce the streaming tensor train approximation (STTA), a new class of algorithms for approximating a given tensor ' in the tensor train fo ...

Isogeometric analysis is a powerful paradigm which exploits the high smoothness of splines for the numerical solution of high order partial differential equations. However, the tensor-product structure of standard multivariate B-spline models is not well s ...

Machine learning frameworks based on correlations of interatomic positions begin with a discretized description of the density of other atoms in the neighborhood of each atom in the system. Symmetry considerations support the use of spherical harmonics to ...

Let G be either a simple linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic l>0 or a quantum group at an l-th root of unity. The category Rep(G) of finite-dimensional G-modules is non-semisimple. In this thesis, we develop new tech ...

BaCuSi2O6 is a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) quantum antiferromagnet containing three different types of stacked, square-lattice bilayer hosting spin-1/2 dimers. Although this compound has been studied extensively over the last two decades, the critical appli ...

We investigate, using a first-principles density functional methodology, the nature of magnetism in monolayer 1T phase of tantalum disulfide (1T-TaS2). Magnetism in the insulating phase of TaS2 is a longstanding puzzle and has led to a variety of theoretic ...

We consider a statistical model for finite-rank symmetric tensor factorization and prove a single-letter variational expression for its asymptotic mutual information when the tensor is of even order. The proof applies the adaptive interpolation method orig ...

At the liquid-gas phase transition in water, the density has a discontinuity at atmospheric pressure; however, the line of these first-order transitions defined by increasing the applied pressure terminates at the critical point(1), a concept ubiquitous in ...

Superconductors with nontrivial band structure topology represent a class of materials with unconventional and potentially useful properties. Recent years have seen much success in creating artificial hybrid structures exhibiting the main characteristics o ...

Let G be a simply connected simple algebraic group over an al- gebraically closed field k of characteristic p > 0. The category of rationalG-modules is not semisimple. We consider the question of when the tensorproduct of two simple G-modules L(λ) and L(μ) ...

A fundamental form of magnon-phonon interaction is an intrinsic property of magnetic materials, the “magnetoelastic coupling.” This form of interaction has been the basis for describing magnetostrictive materials and their applications, where strain induce ...

We introduce a construction of subspaces of the spaces of tangential vector, n-vector, and tensor fields on surfaces. The resulting subspaces can be used as the basis of fast approximation algorithms for design and processing problems that involve tangenti ...

The crystallography of twinning is based on the concepts of simple shear and obliquity introduced by Mugge, Mallard and Friedel at the turn of the last century, with tensor mathematics later developed by Bilby, Bevis and Crocker in the 1960s. We propose a ...

In the last few years, the critical temperature (Tc) of several ITER cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) was determined by magnetization measurements at zero current. The distribution of the critical temperatures (Tc), caused by variation of strain in the N ...

The dimerized quantum magnet BaCuSi2O6 was proposed as an example of "dimensional reduction" arising near the magnetic-field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) due to perfect geometrical frustration of its interbilayer interactions. We demonstrate by hig ...
