This paper presents the experimental validation of a grid-aware real-time control method for hybrid AC/DC microgrids. The optimal control is leveraged by the voltage sensitivity coefficients (SC) that are computed analytically using the close-form expressi ...

Since the 1760s, modern civilization has significantly enhanced human efficiency and living standards, whereas it heavily depends on fossil fuels for primary energy. The overreliance raises concerns about energy and environmental crises. It prompts the nee ...

Despite the wealth of research on smart cities, there is a lack of studies examining interlinkages between smart cities and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In other words, there is limited research on how implementing smart city solutions can lead to ...

The paper describes a case study on the design of district energy infrastructure for the green-field project of the Vale de Santo Antonio (Lisbon, Portugal). The methodology is based on a novel framework built on the sequential integration of three softwar ...

Replacing fossil fuels with alternative energy sources for steam production in industry can help fulfill the targets towards a more sustainable energy landscape. In this work, a high-temperature heat pump and a gas-bearing supported turbocompressor are com ...

One-of-a-kind experimental and numerical investigation is provided in this paper about energy sheet pile walls: earth retaining structures that embed heat exchanger probes within piles for the exploitation of shallow geothermal energy. The study resorts to ...

Inferences using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are resource and energy intensive. Therefore, their execution on highly constrained edge devices demands the careful co-optimization of algorithms and hardware. Addressing this challenge, in this paper ...

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) have developed to a mature technology, able to achieve electrical efficiencies beyond 60%. This makes them particularly suitable for off-grid applications, where SOFCs can supply both electricity and heat at high efficiency. C ...

Voluntary green-rating systems exist in different forms worldwide to certify the sustainability of residential and commercial buildings and help national policies promote energy-efficient design practices. Despite the general assumption that sustainable bu ...

Localised and high-frequency measurements of the global horizontal irradiance (GHI) are a key information to assess the level of power production of distributed photovoltaic generation. The paper presents a supervised machine learning-based procedure to es ...

The integration of technical services in architecture played a crucial role in the history of post-war construction. The Centre Pompidou, conceived and realized between 1971 and 1977 by the architecture studio Piano and Rogers and the engineering firm Ove ...

Natural disasters, population growth, social conflicts, and political or structural crises give rise to forced migrations, which can lead to humanitarian emergencies. According to the “UNHCR annual global trends report”, 65.6 million people were displaced ...

In this work we present the result of a collaboration between the Polytechnic Schools of Dakar (ESP) and Lausanne (EPFL) on the testing and monitoring of solar photovoltaic modules. The collaboration has involved the exchange of knowledge, methodologies an ...

In order to improve user experience and to foster novel ideas, some voices in the HCI community have argued to break fundamental design rules, an approach well known in the art community. In this paper, we use this radical approach to design a playful mobi ...
