The past decade has brought tremendous progress in diagnostic and therapeutic options for cerebrovascular diseases as exemplified by the advent of thrombectomy in ischemic stroke, benefitting a steeply increasing number of stroke patients and potentially p ...

In patients with stable Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), the identification of lesions which will be responsible of a myocardial infarction (MI) during follow-up remains a daily challenge. In this work, we propose to predict culprit stenosis by applying a de ...

SBI-0206965, originally identified as an inhibitor of the autophagy initiator kinase ULK1, has recently been reported as a more potent and selective AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) inhibitor relative to the widely used, but promiscuous inhibitor Compou ...

SARS-CoV-2 started spreading toward the end of 2019 causing COVID-19, a disease that reached pandemic proportions among the human population within months. The reasons for the spectrum of differences in the severity of the disease across the population, an ...

Background Activin-A, a transforming growth factor beta family member, is secreted by many cancer types and is often associated with poor disease prognosis. Previous studies have shown that Activin-A expression can promote cancer progression and reduce the ...

Muscle stem cells (MuSCs) are the primary source of myogenic progenitors during muscle repair and are essential for the long-term regenerative capacity of skeletal muscle. Following myofiber injury, MuSCs transition from a quiescent to an activated state, ...

Despite the improving imaging techniques, it remains challenging to produce magnetic resonance (MR) imaging fingerprints depicting severity of acute ischemia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of the overall high-field H-1 MR Spectroscopy ...

Exercise training (ET) is recommended for lower extremity artery disease (LEAD) management. However, there is still little information on the hemodynamic and metabolic adaptations by skeletal muscle with ET. We examined whether hindlimb perfusion/vasculari ...

Histology is a long standing and well-established gold standard for pathological characterizations. In recent years however, synchrotron radiation-based micro-computed tomography (SR mu CT) has become a tool for extending the imaging of two-dimensional thi ...

Aim Arginase 2 (ARG2) is a mitochondrial enzyme that catalyses hydrolysis ofl-arginine into urea andl-ornithine. In the kidney, ARG2 is localized to the S3 segment of the proximal tubule. It has been shown that expression and activity of this enzyme are up ...

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in cardiac energy metabolism occur in heart failure (HF) and contribute to contractile dysfunction, but their role, if any, in HF-related pathologic remodeling is much less established. CK (creatine kinase), the primary muscle ene ...

Background Impaired heart rate variability (HRV) is associated with increased mortality in sinus rhythm. However, HRV has not been systematically assessed in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We hypothesized that parameters of HRV may be predictive o ...

Aims The long-term outcomes of the intracoronary delivery of autologous bone marrow-derived cells (BMCs) after acute myocardial infarction are not well established. Following the promising 1 year results of the REGENERATE-AMI trial (despite it not achievin ...

Diabetes impacts on brain metabolism, structure, and function. Alterations in brain metabolism have been observed in obesity and diabetes models induced by exposure to diets rich in saturated fat and/or sugar and have been linked to memory impairment. Howe ...

Glucose utilization increases in tumors, a metabolic process that is observed clinically by F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (F-18-FDG-PET). However, is increased glucose uptake important for tumor cells, and which transporters are impl ...
