Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide and the most common lung cancer subtype is lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). Frequently mutated genes involve activating mutations in KRAS and loss of function mutations in TP53. LUADs primarily ...

Energy Geotechnics includes several applications related to the recovery and storage of energy from and into the ground, energy transportation, and the management of waste and carbon dioxide generated from energy use. These applications often involve the n ...

All cells need to be able to sense their environment, and adapt their metabolism, growth and cell division appropriately. In this study, I examined the response of Schizosaccharomyces pombe to a change in the carbon source and how that affects cytokinesis. ...

AMP-activated Protein Kinase (AMPK) is a central regulator of energy homeostasis and a promising drug target for metabolic disorders. It exists as complexes of three subunits, a catalytic alpha, and two regulatory beta and gamma subunits. The regulation of ...

Deregulated energy homeostasis represents a hallmark of aging and results from complex gene-by-environment interactions. Here, we discovered that reducing the expression of the gene ech-6 encoding enoyl-CoA hydratase remitted fat diet-induced deleterious e ...

Muscle stem cells (MuSCs) are the primary source of myogenic progenitors during muscle repair and are essential for the long-term regenerative capacity of skeletal muscle. Following myofiber injury, MuSCs transition from a quiescent to an activated state, ...

Clinical trials have shown that direct activators of an evolutionary-conserved metabolic sensor, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), are beneficial in preventing/treating a range of metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes. These activators, includi ...

Weight loss is key to controlling the increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components, i.e., central obesity, hypertension, prediabetes and dyslipidaemia. The goals of our study were two-fold. First, we characterised the relationships b ...

We use a combination of extreme value statistics, survival analysis and computer-intensive methods to analyse the mortality of Italian and French semi-supercentenarians. After accounting for the effects of the sampling frame, extreme-value modelling leads ...

Redox signaling events mediated by reactive electrophilic species (RES) are key players in several cellular processes. However, the studies on RES have been challenging due to their high reactivity towards numerous nucleophilic groups present in the cells ...

The contraction and relaxation of the heart is controlled by stimulation of the beta 1-adrenoreceptor (AR) signaling cascade, which leads to activation of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) and subsequent cardiac protein phosphorylation. Phosphorylation i ...

The conceptual evolution of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD(+)) from being seen as a simple metabolic cofactor to a pivotal cosubstrate for proteins regulating metabolism and longevity, including the sirtuin family of protein deacylases, has led to ...

Background: An increasing lifespan and the resulting change in our expectations of later life stages are dependent on a good health state. This emphasizes the importance of the development of strategies to further strengthen healthy aging. One important as ...

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a fundamental enzyme that controls energy homeostasis, through orchestrating the cellular response to a reduction in energy availability. Under conditions of cellular energy stress AMPK senses the decrease in ATP leve ...

Sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs) are a family of transcription factors that regulate lipid biosynthesis and adipogenesis by controlling the expression of several enzymes required for cholesterol, fatty acid, triacylglycerol and phospholi ...

Environmental awareness is an essential attribute of all organisms. The homeoviscous adaptation system of Bacillus subtilis provides a powerful experimental model for the investigation of stimulus detection and signaling mechanisms at the molecular level. ...

The evolutionarily conserved nature of the few well-known anti-aging interventions that affect lifespan, such as caloric restriction, suggests that aging-related research in model organisms is directly relevant to human aging. Since human lifespan is a com ...

We present a rapid and high-throughput yeast and flow cytometry based method for predicting kinase inhibitor resistance mutations and determining kinase peptide substrate specificity. Despite the widespread success of targeted kinase inhibitors as cancer t ...

Autophagy is a highly conserved process by which long-lived macromolecules, protein aggregates and dysfunctional/damaged organelles are delivered to lysosomes for degradation. Autophagy plays a crucial role in regulating protein quality control and cell ho ...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects an estimated 5.8 million Americans, and advanced age is the greatest risk factor. AD patients have altered intestinal microbiota. Accordingly, depleting intestinal microbiota in AD animal models reduces amyloid-beta (A beta ...
