Digital data storage is a growing need for our society and finding alternative solutions than those based on silicon or magnetic tapes is a challenge in the era of “big data.” The recent development of polymers that can store information at the molecular l ...

The performance of base-isolated steel structures having special moment frames is assessed. The archetypes, which are designed per ASCE/SEI 7-2016, are simulated in the Finite Element (FE) computational platform, OpenSees. Adopting nonlinear dynamic analys ...

The performance-based earthquake engineering framework utilizes probabilistic seismic demand models to obtain accurate estimates of building engineering demand parameters. These parameters are utilized to estimate earthquake-induced losses in terms of prob ...

As demonstrated by recent events in Italy, New-Zealand, Haiti, and Nepal, earthquakes continue to pose threats to civil infrastructure, including buildings. For a long time seismic ultimate limit states have not been considered in design codes for regions ...

A large number of buildings in regions with low to medium seismic hazard have been designed without considering earthquake actions. Retrofitting of all buildings that fail to meet modern code requirements is economically, technically and environmentally un ...

This paper contains a seismic assessment at urban scale of the cities of Sion and Martigny in Switzerland. These two cities have been identified for the present research based on their importance regarding size and the characteristics of the building stock ...

In the Bay Area of San Francisco, the earthquake contours are not easy to define: seismology is still a relatively recent science, and controversies around methods to evaluate the earthquake risk are constant. In this context, the invitation to think about ...

Recent earthquake events throughout the world have once again exposed the vulnerability of buildings with respect to earthquakes. It is unlikely and unsustainable to design and - especially in regions with low-to-moderate seismic hazard – to retrofit all b ...

The safety of buildings which have been affected by a natural disaster such as an earthquake is currently evaluated manually by certified inspectors who identify visible damage on the structural elements. This process has been proven to be time-consuming, ...

Structural damage usually happens during earthquake events. This had caused damage of properties and even worse, loss of lives. Usually, the greatest losses were not caused by the quake specifically, but rather because of the fall of the structures. The vu ...

After a damaging earthquake, assessment of the residual seismic capacity is required for large parts of the building stock. Increased vulnerability of structures together with the threat of immediate aftershocks call for rapid and objective decision making ...

Assessing seismic vulnerability at large scales requires accurate attribution of individual buildings to more general typological classes that are representative of the seismic behavior of the buildings sharing same attributes. One-by-one evaluation of all ...

An application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) named ANTIGONE (ANalog To dIGital cONvErter) was designed in AMS 0.35 mu m technology to interface with four Ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET) sensors and perform real-time monitoring of some bi ...
