Applications such as optical clocks, gas spectroscopy, and optical coherent tomography stand to benefit significantly from the integration of on-chip supercontinuum sources. Materials exhibiting both second- and third-order nonlinearities are particularly ...

We model, via classical molecular dynamics simulations, the plastic phase of ice VII across a wide range of the phase diagram of interest for planetary investigations. Although structural and dynamical properties of plastic ice VII are mostly independent o ...

Triboelectric nanogenerators are establishing themselves as promising candidates for realizing high-efficient energy harvesting from largely available droplets. However, the conventional droplet-based liquid-solid triboelectric nanogenerator (DLS-TENG) has ...

The infiltration of a non-wetting liquid, such as molten metal, into a porous solid, such as a ceramic preform, is influenced by the wetting angle of the liquid on the solid. The link between local wetting and the minimum pressure required for initiation o ...

In this work we dive into key questions regarding the wetting of a nanoscale droplet which provides fundamental understanding of Vapor-Liquid-Solid growth mode of nanowires. This understanding is important to performreproducible NW fabrication and allow th ...

Molecular simulations allow to investigate the behaviour of materials at the atomistic level, shedding light on phenomena that cannot be directly observed in experiments. Accurate results can be obtained with ab initio methods, while simulations of large-s ...

The photoelectron spectra of both liquid and gas phase aromatic molecules are reported. The spectra were obtained using a 34.1 eV source produced by high harmonic generation and analysed with the help of high-level ab initio simulations using the reflectio ...

Water vapor is continuously adsorbed onto and desorbed from all kinds of surfaces depending on changes in relative humidity. Adsorption-desorption hysteresis of water that occurs on various nonporous surfaces and extends down to low relative humidities has ...

The frequent contact people have with liquids containing pathogenic microorganisms provides opportunities for disease transmission. In this work, we quantified the transfer of bacteria—using E. coli as a model- from liquid to skin, estimated liquid retenti ...

Magnetostriction results from the coupling between magnetic and elastic degrees of freedom. Though it is associated with a relatively small energy, we show that it plays an important role in determining the site of an implanted muon, so that the energetica ...

It has been discovered quite recently that Icosahedral Short-Range Order (ISRO) of atoms in the liquid phase of metallic alloys surrounding some trace elements added to the melt can influence both the nucleation and growth of the primary phase. In this wor ...

In concentrated macromolecular dispersions, far-from-ideal intermolecular interactions determine the dispersion behaviors including phase transition, crystallization, and liquid-liquid phase separation. Here, we present a novel versatile capillary-cell des ...

In this work, we have studied various aspects of catalysts and catalytic processes at the solid-liquid interface, e.g. the reduction of supported PdO, the formation of Pd hydrides, their quantification, the their reactivity in a transient in time-resolved ...

Sorption of mercury (Hg) in soils is suggested to be predominantly associated with organic matter (OM). However, there is a growing collection of research that suggests that clay minerals and oxides are also important solid phases for the sorption of solu ...

A gravity-driven droplet will rapidly flow down an inclined substrate, resisted only by stresses inside the liquid. If the substrate is compliant, with an elastic modulus G < 100 kPa, the droplet will markedly slow as a consequence of viscoelastic braking. ...

This thesis investigates the interaction between mechanically induced flow of a liquid metal into a porous solid, and kinetic effects at the triple line. The approach is experimental and focuses on metal-ceramic systems for which the literature gives value ...

A transient state of the excess electron in liquid water preceding the development of the solvation shell, the so-called wet electron, has been invoked to explain spectroscopic observations, but its binding energy and atomic structure have remained highly ...

Cavitation bubbles, when correctly tuned, may provide interesting mechanical and chemical effects to their surroundings owing to their violent collapse. Such an event may produce high-speed liquid jetting, extreme heating, as well as pressures of thousands ...

Objective: We aim to improve operational robustness of liquid scanning probes. Two main failure modes to be addressed are an obstruction of the flow path of the processing liquid and a deviation from the desired gap distance between probe and sample. Metho ...

The initiation of contact between liquid and a dry solid is of great fundamental and practical importance. We experimentally probe the dynamics of wetting that occur when an impacting drop first contacts a dry surface. We show that, initially, wetting is m ...
