This paper reflects on the pedagogy used for a series of student workshops on building with reused materials at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and presents the results of its 7 th edition, which focused on floor systems. During these w ...

To address the rising demand for plastics, it is essential to create new types of polymers that are both highly recyclable and emit minimal amounts of greenhouse gases. These plastics should be derived from readily available, renewable feedstocks. Such eff ...

In this study, TC-PRISMA was employed to simulate the precipitation (number density and radius) of an FeMnSi-based shape memory alloy (FeMnSi-SMA), with a chemical composition of Fe-17Mn-5Si-10Cr-4Ni-1(V, C) (wt%), during one-step and two-step aging proces ...

The development of new adhesives has allowed to expand the application of bonding into the most diverse industrial fields. This review article presents the commonly used experimental methods for the investigation of mechanical performance of adhesively bon ...

As acknowledged explicitly or implicitly in most of current design codes, a high level of sustained loading has a detrimental effect on the concrete compressive strength. However, its beneficial effect in terms of deformation capacity is neglected in most ...

In ride-sharing, commuters with similar itineraries share a vehicle for their trip. Despite its clear benefits in terms of reduced congestion, ride-sharing is not yet widely accepted. We propose a specific ride-sharing variant, where drivers are completely ...

More and more hydropower plants are operating as regulator of renewable energy such as solar and wind energy resources. Because these renewable energy resources are highly volatile, so hydraulic turbines have to switch working condition in a wide flow rang ...

We explore the process of modeling aeolian snow transport around buildings by proposing a set of similarity requirements on simulating a single snow fall event with drifting. The similarity criteria are used to guide our wind tunnel tests from the particle ...

Free-standing masonry column is a recurrent typology of built cultural heritage. Usually raised without seismic design, columns are subject to intense rocking and overturning under strong ground motions. In this paper, a strategy to assess their seismic vu ...

Development of novel analytical devices complying with modern requirements of simplicity and cost-effectiveness is an important task. Multisensor systems based on various types of chemical sensors are promising tools in this respect. Herein the development ...

Is consciousness a continuous stream of percepts or is it discrete, occurring only at certain moments in time? This question has puzzled philosophers, psychologists, and neuroscientists for centuries. Both hypotheses have fallen repeatedly in and out of fa ...

The mass-utilization of fossil resources has led to a dramatic increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) production, most of which is released directly into the Earth's atmosphere, resulting in global warming. Efforts to contain CO2 emissions and to capture, store ...

On-site biological hand washing water treatment can improve global access to safe hand washing water, but requires a thorough understanding of the chemical composition of the water to be treated, and an effective treatment strategy. This study first presen ...

The punching shear resistance formulation provided by Model Code 2010 is calibrated on the basis of experimental tests on isolated slabs supported on columns. According to Level of Approximation approach, several quantities are required for the design punc ...

Volume reduction (condensation) is a key for the practical usage of human urine as a fertilizer because it enables the saving of storage space and the reduction of transportation cost. However, concentrated urine may carry infectious disease risks resultin ...

Various vibrational modes present in molecular mixtures of laboratory and atmospheric aerosols give rise to complex Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) absorption spectra. Such spectra can be chemically informative, but they often require sophisticated algo ...

This thesis deals with the combined utilisation of a reaction calorimeter, the RC1® commercialised by Mettler Toledo and equipped with a 2 L glass reactor, and the heat transfer dynamics modelling of industrial reactors. By doing so, the temperature evolut ...
