Muscular arteries possess the ability to control actively their lumen by altering the tone of the smooth muscle cells of the arterial wall, a property which is vital for a large number of the hemodynamical functions of the body. Arterial contraction is due ...

Fuel cell systems integrate the fuel cell technology with fuel processing and post processing. A thermo-economic optimization method has been developed to systematically generate the most attractive configurations of the integrated system. In the developed ...

The properties of sealing materials are important for the performance and reliability of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). Even if the properties of a sealing material can be studied separately, it remains difficult to quantify the effect of an imperfect seal ...

Maintaining a fuel cell system in correct operating conditions when subjected to fast load changes requires good system control. In order to design such a controller, a simple PEFC system model describing all the important system dynamics and cross couplin ...

Background: The electricity production market benefits from combined cycles with their high efficiency. In the lower power range, Fuel Cells are a good candidate to combine with gas turbines. Such systems can achieve efficiencies of 60% and more. High tem ...

A review. The interplay between carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins dets. the stability and flexibility as well as the adhesive and responsive features of the surfaces of all cells. The mol. understanding of the interactions among and between the different ...

Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a congenital red cell aplasia in which 25% of the patients have a mutation in the ribosomal protein S19 (RPS19) gene. To study effects of RPS19 deficiency in hematopoiesis we transduced CD34(+) umbilical cord blood (CB) and ...

Microfluidic devices are increasingly used to perform biological experiments on a single-cell basis. However, long-term stability of cell positions is still an issue. A novel biocompatible method for cell entrapment and release on a microchip is presented. ...

The effect of electrochem. promotion of catalysis or nonfaradaic electrochem. modification of catalytic activity or electropromotion was studied for the model reaction of ethylene oxidn. on sputter-coated Rh films. The thin (40 nm) Rh films were deposited ...

The electrochem. promotion of the complete catalytic oxidn. of ethylene and toluene on RuO2Catalyst films deposited on Y2O3-stabilized-ZrO2 (YSZ) was studied at temps. 400 to 500 Deg. Anodic polarization (1.5 V), i.e. O2- supply from the YSZ support to the ...

Antigen-presenting dendritic cells often acquire foreign antigens in peripheral tissues such as the skin. Optimal encounter with naive T cells for the presentation of these antigens requires that the dendritic cells migrate to draining lymph nodes through ...

Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) allows the user to investigate interactions between fluorescent partners. One crucial issue when calculating sensitized emission FRET is the correction for spectral bleed-throughs (SBTs), which requires to calc ...
