The tension–tension fatigue behavior of pseudo-ductile hybrid bonded-bolted double lap basalt composite joints, composed of pseudo-ductile adhesives and adherends with multi-directional fiber architecture, was experimentally investigated. The fatigue damag ...

This paper presents a novel hybrid framework for generating and updating a synthetic population. We call it hybrid because it combines model-based and data-driven approaches. Existing generators produce a snapshot of synthetic data that becomes outdated ov ...

GRE@T-PIONEeR is a Horizon 2020 project coordinated by Chalmers University of Technology, running over the period 2020-2024. 18 university teachers from 8 different universities located in 6 different countries gathered forces to develop and offer advanced ...

In this thesis, we conduct a comprehensive investigation into structural instabilities of both elastic and magneto-elastic beams and shells, resulting in a creative proposal to design a programmable braille reader. Methodologically, we combine numerical si ...

Using the GKEngine code which simulates an electrostatic plasma with adiabatic electron response under a sheared-slab geometry, an attempt at developing a hybrid approach between the delta-f and full-f schemes to describe plasma profiles exhibiting high fl ...

Microscopic traffic flow models can be distinguished in lane-based or lane-free depending on the degree of lane-discipline. This distinction holds true only if motorcycles are neglected in lane-based traffic. In cities, as opposed to highways, this is an o ...

The European Roadmap to Fusion Electricity (Federici et al., 2018) [1] details the path to complete within the next three decades the DEMOnstration power plant, DEMO, aiming to a net gain of Energy Q=40. The 2018 DEMO baseline considers a 2 GW tokamak devi ...

In the evolution of structural glass beam elements, the requirements for post-fracture load bearing capacity and safe failure behaviour have led to the development of reinforced and post-tensioned beams. Maximum bending capacity in the post-fracture state ...

This paper presents an innovative design concept for embedded column base (ECB) connections. The developed ECB connection achieves a non-degrading hysteretic response. In the proposed ECB connections, the dissipative zone is shifted into the embedded porti ...

The convergence of human and artificial intelligence is currently receiving considerable scholarly attention. Much debate about the resulting Hybrid Minds focuses on the integration of artificial intelligence into the human brain through intelligent brain- ...

Reuse of reinforced concrete (RC) components reduces construction’s environmental impacts and waste. Rather than crushing the concrete of an obsolete structure, its components are saw cut and later reassembled in a new structure. The theoretical feasibilit ...

Buckled beams have become key building blocks in compliant mechanisms to achieve nonlinear behaviors, such as bistability, constant-force and stiffness tuning. However, designing and modeling such components is challenging due to their highly nonlinear cha ...

Using phase-modulation-induced potential gradient whose period is synchronized to a microwave opto-electronic oscillator, dissipative Kerr solitons generated in a crystalline optical microresonator are trapped by the soliton tweezing effect, exhibiting a s ...

Steel beams with reduced beam section (RBS) are often used as part of prequalified connections in seismic regions. However, RBS connections are not as common in Europe. Reasons relate to easiness in fabrication, which requires on-site welding, and the seis ...

The concept of a multi-source inverter (MSI) based on NPC topology was recently introduced for hybrid-electric powertrains to connect several dc sources to the traction load in a single conversion stage without magnetics. This work proposes a new modulatio ...

This paper summarizes preliminary findings of nonlinear simulations aiming to quantify the seismic demands of codecompliant steel MRFs with variable panel zone targeted shear distortions, 𝛾!. The probability of beam fractures is explicitly considered in th ...

Research conducted after the 1994 Northridge earthquake in the U.S. and the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan led to the development of today's pre-qualified beam-to-column connections for capacity-designed steel moment resisting frames (MRFs). Welded moment c ...

Forecasting pedestrians' future motions is essential for autonomous driving systems to safely navigate in urban areas. However, existing prediction algorithms often overly rely on past observed trajectories and tend to fail around abrupt dynamic changes, s ...

A hybrid design of the Central Solenoid is under study within the conceptual design phase of the European DEMO fusion reactor. It is based on HTS conductors in the innermost high-field layers, and Nb3Sn and NbTi conductors for field values below 15 T. Sinc ...

We demonstrate optical frequency comb generation in hybrid high-Q optical microresonators fabricated using direct wafer bonding of photonic Damascene silicon nitride wafer with thin-film lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI). The devices enable direct phase ...
