Semiconducting alloys, in particular SiGe, have been employed for several decades as high-temperature thermoelectric materials. Devising strategies to reduce their thermal conductivity may provide a substantial improvement in their thermoelectric performan ...

Native metals of igneous origin are recognized as one of the distinctive features of basalts from the Moon. Our study demonstrates that the tiny Fe-Ni metal blebs nucleated from lunar magma exhibit unanticipated, nutshell-like, crystallographic microstruct ...

Benzenetricarboxamide (BTA) derivatives are versatile compounds widely employed as nucleating agents in commercial semicrystalline plastics and as supramolecular ligands in self-assembling telechelic polymer-based organogels, hydrogels, and bulk elastomers ...

Alloys based on lanthanum phosphate (LaPO4) are often employed as thermal barrier coatings, due to their low thermal conductivity and structural stability over a wide temperature range. To enhance the thermal-insulation performance of these alloys, it is e ...

In this paper, we investigate a novel passive approach to improve the actuation frequency of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) with the Kirigami-inspired design using a thin layer of highly thermally conductive material. By depositing an 80 nm layer of gold on th ...

Aminoacids and peptides generally exhibit zwitterionic forms withsalt bridge (SB) structures in solution but charge-solvated (CS) motifsin the gas phase. Here, we report a study of non-covalent complexesof the protonated amino acid arginine, ArgH(+)(H2O)( ...

Smart thermostats are increasingly popular in homes and buildings as they improve occupant comfort, lower energy use in heating and cooling systems, and reduce utility bills by automatically adjusting room temperature according to measurements of their bui ...

This paper studies numerically the convection of water vapour in snowpacks using an Eulerian-Eulerian two-phase approach. The convective water vapour transport in snow and its effects on snow density are often invoked to explain observed density profiles, ...

Heat transfer measurements of flow boiling Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in vertical upward direction have been carried out with a dedicated test facility at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The experiments have been conducted in a vertical up ...

Direct air capture using solid adsorbents is a proven technology critical to reducing our net greenhouse gas emissions to zero and beyond. Currently, academic research into the technology mainly focuses on the devel-opment of new adsorbents. However, there ...

Modular multifunctional building elements can overcome major disadvantages of the traditional sequential design and become prospective design solutions for sustainable construction. Thus, this work explores lightweight glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) ...

Sequentially stacked impingement channels allow for a more effective use of the cooling fluid and can limit the heat transfer reduction due to the crossflow when the number of jets increases. In this paper, sequential impingement channels are experimentall ...

WC-Co cemented carbides are composites, which combine a hard phase consisting of WC grains and a metallic ductile phase as a binder. Their excellent mechanical properties, combining high hardness, toughness and refractory properties, make them excellent ma ...

The project ASHRAE 1759-RP addresses the impact of the ventilated cavity behind external claddings on the thermal performance of the wall structure by defining “effective thermal resistance” of air gaps based on the linearized network of thermal resistance ...

The power density and, consequently, power hungriness of server processors is growing by the day. Traditional air cooling systems fail to cope with such high heat densities, whereas single-phase liquid-cooling still requires high mass flowrate, high pumpin ...

The sector of transportation accounts for about one third of the total energy consumption in Switzerland. A monitoring campaign of the energy consumption of a regional train revealed the critical energy-consuming systems. Heating, cooling and ventilation w ...

Net Surface Heat Flux (SurHF) was estimated from 2008 to 2014 for Lake Geneva (Switzerland/France), using long‐term temperature depth profiles at two locations, hourly maps of reanalysis meteorological data from a numerical weather model and lake surface w ...

The development of newer and more efficient cooling techniques to sustain the increasing power density of high-performance computing systems is becoming one of the major challenges in the development of microelectronics. In this framework, two-phase coolin ...

Thermal transport is a key feature for the operation of phase change memory devices which rest on a fast and reversible transformation between the crystalline and amorphous phases of chalcogenide alloys upon Joule heating. In this paper we report on the ab ...

Urban densification issues are one of the key challenges for most European cities. In this context, the vertical extension of existing buildings provides a solution to create usable spaces without wasting additional land. Little attention has been given to ...
