Treatment-resistant depression is a severe form of major depressive disorder and deep brain stimulation is currently an investigational treatment. The stimulation's therapeutic effect may be explained through the functional and structural connectivities be ...

Adolescent individuals exhibit great variability in cortical dynamics and behavioral outcomes. The developing adolescent brain is highly sensitive to social experiences and environmental insults, influencing how personality traits emerge. A distinct patter ...

IntroductionOne-third of mothers rate their childbirth as traumatic. The prevalence of childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD) is 4.7%. Skin-to-skin contact is a protective factor against CB-PTSD. However, during a caesarean section (CS ...

Alterations of the limbic system may be present in the chronic phase of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our aim was to study the long-term impact of this disease on limbic system-related behaviour and its associated brain functional connectivity, according to the se ...

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a highly disabling psychiatric condition that may arise after exposure to acute and severe trauma. It is a highly prevalent mental disorder worldwide, and the current treatment options for these patients remain limit ...

Background: The pathophysiology behind tinnitus is still not well understood. Different imaging methods help in the understanding of the complex relationships that lead to the perception of tinnitus. Objective: Herein, different functional imaging methods t ...

Recent years have seen considerable progress in understanding brain function, and in modulating it through real-time fMRI neurofeedback (NF). Inspired by these advances, paired with the unique possibility of inducing the clinically relevant Presence Halluc ...

Functional and structural connectivity alterations in short- and long-range projections have been reported across neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). Interhemispheric callosal projection neurons (CPN) represent one of the major long-range projections in th ...

Background: Cannabis use and cannabis use disorder (CUD) are associated with mental health disorders, however the extent of this matter among pregnant and recently postpartum (e.g., new moms) women in the US is un-known. Associations between cannabis use, ...

Objectives: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe, chronic, affective disorder characterized by recurrent switching between mood states, psychomotor and cognitive symptoms, which can linger in euthymic states as residual symptoms. Hippocampal alterations may p ...

In the last twenty years, advances in real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rt-fMRI) have offered exciting new tools to study the human brain. One of them, termed rt-fMRI neurofeedback (NF), has turned the MRI scanner environment into an interac ...

BackgroundDepression and anxiety are known to be associated with stress-induced changes in the immune system. Bothersome tinnitus can be related to stress and often co-occurs with depression and anxiety. This study investigates associations of psychologica ...

Individuals frequently differ in their behavioral and cognitive responses to stress. However, whether motivation is differently affected by acute stress in different individuals remains to be established. By exploiting natural variation in trait anxiety in ...

We performed magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) on healthy individuals with tinnitus and no hearing loss (n = 16) vs. a matched control group (n = 17) to further elucidate the role of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters in tinnitus. Two-dimensio ...

BackgroundTinnitus is a heterogeneous condition which may be associated with moderate to severe disability, but the reasons why only a subset of individuals is burdened by the condition are not fully clear. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) allows a be ...

There is growing evidence showing that the representation of the human “self” recruits special systems across different functions and modalities. Compared to self-face and self-body representations, few studies have investigated neural underpinnings specif ...

Introduction The WHO estimates that each year 5 million people are left permanently disabled after stroke. Adjuvant treatments to promote the effects of rehabilitation are urgently needed. Cortical excitability and neuroplasticity can be enhanced by non-in ...

High levels of trait anxiety are associated with impaired attentional control, changes in brain activity during attentional control tasks and altered network resting state functional connectivity (RSFC). Specifically, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex to ante ...

The relation between brain functional activity and the underlying structure is complex and varies depending on the specific brain region. Recently, we used graph signal processing to introduce the structural-decoupling index (SDI), a novel metric quantifyi ...

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a widespread disease affecting approximately 20% of men. With a rising incidence due to the global ageing of the world population, it is estimated that over 322 million patients will be affected in 2025. While not being a lifet ...
