Loop closure detection helps simultaneous localization and mapping systems reduce map and state uncertainty via recognizing previously visited places along the path of a mobile robot. However, visual loop closure detection is susceptible to scenes with dyn ...

In the chemical industry, a large class of processes involving reactions can be described by partial differential equations that depend on time and on one or more spatial coordinates. Examples of such distributed reaction systems are tubular reactors and r ...

Electrothermal actuators have many advantages compared to other actuators used in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). They are simple to design, easy to fabricate and provide large displacements at low voltages. Low voltages enable less stringent pass ...

We consider a stylized core-periphery financial network in which links lead to the creation of projects in the outside economy but make banks prone to contagion risk. The controller seeks to maximize, under budget constraints, the value of the financial sy ...

This paper deals with input adaptation in dynamic processes in order to guarantee feasible and optimal operation despite the presence of uncertainty. The proposed adaptation consists in using the nominal optimal inputs and adding appropriately designed inp ...

The operation of dynamic processes can be optimized using models that predict the system behavior well, in particular its optimality features. In practice, however, process models are often structurally inaccurate, and on-line adaptation is typically requi ...

This thesis addresses the problem of industrial real-time process optimization that suffers from the presence of uncertainty. Since a process model is typically used to compute the optimal operating conditions, both plant-model mismatch and process disturb ...

Recent advances in vector-field imaging have brought to the forefront the need for efficient denoising and reconstruction algorithms that take the physical properties of vector fields into account and can be applied to large volumes of data. With these req ...

Dynamic optimization can be used to determine optimal input profiles for dynamic processes. Due to plant-model mismatch and disturbances, the optimal inputs determined through model-based optimization will, in general, not be optimal for the plant. Modifie ...

Run-to-run control is a technique that exploits the repetitive nature of processes to iteratively adjust the inputs and drive the run-end outputs to their reference values. It can be used to control both static and finite-time dynamic systems. Although the ...

We present the design of a wide dynamic-range CMOS A/D interface circuit for ionization chambers, able to digitize input charge of both polarities over six decades, to operate in a radioactive environment, and foreseen working without calibration. The circ ...

This paper is concerned with input adaptation in dynamic processes in order to guarantee feasible and optimal operation despite the presence of uncertainty. For optimal control problems having mixed control-state constraints, two sets of directions can be ...

In the context of dynamic optimization, plant variations necessitate adaptation of the input profiles in order to guarantee both feasible and optimal operation. For those problems having path constraints, two sets of directions can be distinguished in the ...

Recently we have proposed a new image device called the gigavision camera. The main feature of this camera is that the pixels have a binary response. The response function of a gigavision sensor is non-linear and similar to a logarithmic function, which ma ...

A powerful approach for dynamic optimization in the presence of uncertainty is to incorporate measurements into the optimization framework so as to track the optimum. For nonsingular control problems, this can be done by tracking active constraints along b ...

Dynamic optimization provides a unified framework for improving process operations while taking operational constraints into account. In the presence of uncertainty, measurements can be incorporated into the optimization framework for tracking the optimum. ...

In a distributed stream processing system, streaming data are continuously disseminated from the sources to the distributed processing servers. To enhance the dissemination efficiency, these servers are typically organized into one or more dissemination tr ...

Optimization arises naturally when process performance needs improvement. This is often the case in industry because of competition – the product has to be proposed at the lowest possible cost. From the point of view of control, optimization consists in de ...

Given three or four synchronized videos taken at eye level and from different angles, we show that we can effectively use dynamic programming to accurately follow up to six individuals across thousands of frames in spite of significant occlusions. In addit ...

We introduce an extended class of cardinal LL-splines, where L is a pseudo-differential operator satisfying some admissibility conditions. We show that the LL-spline signal interpolation problem is well posed and that its solution is the unique minimizer ...
