Our motivation in this paper is twofold. First, we study the geometry of a class of exploration sets, called exit sets, which are naturally associated with a 2D vector-valued Gaussian Free Field:

\phi : \mathbb{Z}^2 \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^N

N \ge 1

. W ...

A common method for creating compliant electrodes for dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) and soft sensors is to incorporate electrically conductive carbon particles into a polymer matrix. However, using unidirectional aligned carbon fibers instead not o ...

We develop techniques to study the phase transition for planar Gaussian percolation models that are not (necessarily) positively correlated. These models lack the property of positive associations (also known as the 'FKG inequality'), and hence many classi ...

We examine the influence of surface charge on the percolation, gel-point and phase behavior of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) suspensions in relation to their nonlinear rheological material response. Desulfation decreases CNC surface charge density which lead ...

We study the performance of Markov chains for the q-state ferromagnetic Potts model on random regular graphs. While the cases of the grid and the complete graph are by now well-understood, the case of random regular graphs has resisted a detailed analysis ...

In this thesis, we consider an anisotropic finite-range bond percolation model on

\mathbb{Z}^2

. On each horizontal layer

\{(x,i):x\in\mathbb{Z}\}

for

i\in\mathbb{Z}

, we have edges

\langle(x,i),(y,i)\rangle

for

1\leq|x-y|\leq N

with $N\in\mathbb{N ...

The drainage process in the gas diffusion layer (GDL) of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells is investigated with an ex situ experimental approach. The drainage process is investigated for stable displacement, capillary fingering, and viscous fingeri ...

The infiltration of a non-wetting liquid, such as molten metal, into a porous solid, such as a ceramic preform, is influenced by the wetting angle of the liquid on the solid. The link between local wetting and the minimum pressure required for initiation o ...

X-ray magnetic critical scattering measurements and specific heat measurements were performed on the perovskite iridate Sr3Ir2O7. We find that the magnetic interactions close to the Neel temperature T-N = 283.4(2) K are three-dimensional. This contrasts wi ...

The phase diagram of the quantum spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic J(1)-J(2) XXZ chain was obtained by Haldane using bosonization techniques [Haldane, Phys. Rev. B 25, 4925 (1982); 26, 5257 (1982)]. It supports three distinct phases for 0

We provide a comprehensive quantitative analysis of localized and extended topological defects in the steady state of 2D passive and active repulsive Brownian disk systems. We show that, both in and out-of-equilibrium, the passage from the solid to the hex ...

A relationship based upon analogy is explored between (i) a lattice-based model for percolation by cylinders that employs distinct site types with unequal occupation probabilities in order to capture heterogeneities in the particle dispersion, and (ii) the ...

The viscoelastic behavior of dilute suspensions of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanoparticles in a liquid SU8 epoxy dissolved in gamma butyrolactone was investigated at RGO concentrations in the range from 0.16 to 1.07 vol. %. Our results revealed that the ...

The upcoming Internet of Things (IoT) is foreseen to encompass massive numbers of connected devices, smart objects, and cyber-physical systems. Due to the large scale and massive deployment of devices, it is deemed infeasible to safeguard 100% of the devic ...

We study the triangular-lattice Ising model with dipolar interactions, inspired by its realisation in artificial arrays of nanomagnets. We show that a classical spin-liquid forms at intermediate temperatures, and that its behaviour can be tuned by temperat ...

The recent investigation of chains of Rydberg atoms has brought back the problem of commensurateincommensurate transitions into the focus of current research. In two-dimensional classical systems or in one-dimensional quantum systems, the commensurate melt ...

We investigate the size distribution of damage clusters in concrete under uniaxial tension loading conditions. Using the finite-element method, the concrete is modeled at the mesoscale by a random distribution of elastic spherical aggregates within an elas ...

We perform a numerical bootstrap study of the mixed correlator system containing the half-BPS operators of dimension two and three in N = 4 Super Yang-Mills. This setup improves on previous works in the literature that only considered single correlators of ...

Networks are central in the modeling and analysis of many large-scale human and technical systems, and they have applications in diverse fields such as computer science, biology, social sciences, and economics. Recently, network mining has been an active a ...

We report ac susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron scattering measurements on a dipolar-coupled antiferromagnet LiYbF4. For the thermal transition, the order-parameter critical exponent is found to be 0.20(1) and the specific-heat critical exponent -0 ...
