The seismic assessment of existing steel structures necessitates the development of practice- oriented engineering models for use in nonlinear static and dynamic analysis procedures. These models should encompass the full range of the anticipated nonlinear ...

Nonstructural components in buildings can be subjected to very large acceleration and deformation demands during earthquakes. This is particularly true for flexible components that are tuned or nearly tuned to one of the modal frequencies of the supporting ...

The non-dimensional energy of starting vortex rings typically converges to values around 0.33 when they are created by a piston-cylinder or a bluff body translating at a constant speed. To explore the limits of the universality of this value and to analyse ...

Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis, as the most prevalent approach to evaluate earthquake hazard, is commonly based on earthquake catalogs. Although previous studies show that the recurrence time of large-magnitude (M-w > 7.0) events in Iran is more tha ...

Acceleration measurements are fundamental in applications such as consumer electronics, navigation, automotive safety and Internet of things (IoT). In comparison with capacitive or piezoresistive MEMS accelerometers, resonant graphene accelerometers have t ...

In this article we study the so-called water tank system. In this system, the behavior of water contained in a 1-D tank is modelled by Saint-Venant equations, with a scalar distributed control. It is well-known that the linearized systems around uniform st ...

The forms of U-shaped UHPFRC beams have not been investigated for the highway footbridge. Compared with the traditional section forms, the U-shaped UHPFRC beams can reduce the material consumption under the condition of providing the same bearing capacity. ...

Earthquake loss estimation in composite-steel moment resisting frames (MRFs) necessitates a proper estimation of the level of damage in steel beam-to-slab connections. These usually feature welded headed shear studs to ensure the composite action between t ...

The thermomechanical coupling of Mullins damage in filled EPDM has been investigated by analysing the self-heating via Infrared thermography (IR) and the voiding fraction by Digital Image Correlation (DIC). The volumetric strain measured during the rubber ...

We monitor dynamic rupture propagation during laboratory stick-slip experiments performed on saw-cut Westerly granite under upper crustal conditions (10-90 MPa). Spectral analysis of high-frequency acoustic waveforms provided evidence that energy radiation ...

Despite being a powerful medical imaging technique which does not emit any ionizing radiation, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) always had the major problem of long scanning times that can take up to an hour depending on the application. It also requires u ...

Post-reconnaissance findings after recent earthquakes have shown that the effect of the vertical acceleration component of the ground motion can be more damaging than typically considered thus far, particularly in near-field regions where the ratio of vert ...

Ambient vibration measurements and 3-D nonlinear time-history numerical modeling are used to assess the retrofitting measures conducted in a 6-story unreinforced masonry building (URM) built in the end of the 19th century in Switzerland. Retrofitting measu ...

In countries of low to moderate seismicity, such as Switzerland, unreinforced masonry (URM) is mainly used in residential buildings due to its good insulation capacity and fire resistance along with a fair compressive strength. URM walls however show a lim ...

The Accelerator on a Chip International Program (ACHIP) is an international collaboration, funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, with the goal of demonstrating that laser-driven accelerator can be integrated on a chip to fully build an accelerat ...

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of spatial resolution and parallel imaging acceleration factor on the quality of the motion estimates derived from image navigators with a three-dimensional (3D) gradient-recalled echo (GRE) acquisition with fat excitatio ...

Significant progress has been made in recent years toward a better understanding of the liquefaction phenomena. Yet, the combined effects of excess pore pressure generation, permanent soil deformation, and ground shaking, with and without mitigation, on th ...

Avoidance of collapse is the most important objective in earthquake resistant design, but assessing the probability of collapse of a structure during an earthquake is technically challenging and it is computationally demanding. This paper summarizes recent ...

Nowadays inertial sensors are extensively used for gait analysis. They can be used to perform temporal event detection (i.e. step detection) and to estimate the orientation of the feet and other body segments to determine walking speed and distance. Usuall ...

In daily life, a person’s gait—an important marker for his/her health status—is usually assessed using inertial sensors fixed to lower limbs or trunk. Such sensor locations are not well suited for continuous and long duration measurements. A better locatio ...
