Optical parametric amplification is a promising alternative to traditional erbium-doped amplifiers, offering unidirectional, low-noise, and broadband amplification. Here we present an integrated continuous-traveling-wave parametric amplifier that surpasses ...

Combining optical gain in direct-bandgap III-V materials with tunable optical feedback offered by advanced photonic integrated circuits is key to chip-scale external-cavity lasers (ECL), offering wideband tunability along with low optical linewidths. Exter ...

The application of Raman scattering in biosensing diverges significantly from its previous usage in qualitative analysis, eliminating the necessity for spectroscopy in certain cases. Here, we push the frontiers of optical biosensing by integrating a custom ...

Programmable photonics promise a plethora of optical functions while at the same time reducing the time and costs of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) development. One primary bottleneck for development of these systems is the difficulty in increasing comp ...

The ability to amplify optical signals is of pivotal importance across science and technology typically using rare-earth-doped fibres or gain media based on III-V semiconductors. A different physical process to amplify optical signals is to use the Kerr no ...

The present invention relates to an electrically tunable photonic resonator device for a component having a fast and flat actuation response, comprising: - At least one optical waveguide with an optical interface for coupling in laser light, - At least one ...

Like integrated electronics, integrated photonics such as Silicon Photonics benefit from increased device-density on a single chip. Silicon is an excellent material for integrated photonics because its high refractive index allows devices to be made small, ...

The field of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) is reviewed. This field leverages mechanics at the nanometer to micrometer scale to improve existing components and introduce novel functionalities in PICs. This rev ...

We exploit backward stimulated Brillouin scattering in gases to achieve unprecedented nonlinear optical amplification in fibers. The gain coefficient is 10 times larger than any reported nonlinear gain in gas-filled HC-PCF and 6 times larger than the large ...

Resonant waveguide gratings (RWGs), also known as guided mode resonant (GMR) gratings or waveguide-mode resonant gratings, are dielectric structures where these resonant diffractive elements benefit from lateral leaky guided modes and can operate from UV t ...

Nonbenzenoid carbocyclic rings are postulated to serve as important structural elements toward tuning the chemical and electronic properties of extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, or namely nanographenes), necessitating a rational and atomical ...

Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy is widespread, owing to its demonstrated ability to resolve dynamical processes within cells and to identify the structure and position of specific proteins in the interior of protein complexes. Nowadays, subcellula ...

The thermomechanical behavior of a standard single mode fiber with different coating materials is theoretically analyzed under different temperature conditions. Results show that the thermal expansion/shrinkage of the fiber coating introduces an extra stra ...

Linear and nonlinear two-dimensional image processing approaches are analyzed with the aim of removing noise from data acquired by distributed optical fiber sensors based on Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA). The impact of the filter parameter ...

A spider uses up to seven different types of silk, all having specific functions, as building material, weapon and sensory organ to detect the presence of preys on its web. Recently, scientists have put under the limelight the extraordinary properties of t ...

A technique based on a multi-dimensional signal processing approach is here described for performance enhancement of distributed optical fibre sensors. In particular, the main features of linear and nonlinear image denoising techniques are described for si ...

We report on nonlinear frequency conversion from the telecom range via second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) in suspended gallium nitride slab photonic crystal (PhC) cavities on silicon, under continuous-wave resonant excitat ...

Modulation instability (MI) as the main limit to the sensing distance of distributed fiber sensors is thoroughly investigated in this thesis in order to obtain a model for predicting its characteristics and alleviating its effects. Starting from Maxwell's ...

Image processing is proposed and experimentally demonstrated to improve the capabilities of Raman distributed optical fibre sensors. The here reported technique consists in stacking consecutive one-dimensional Raman Stokes and anti-Stokes traces in two-dim ...

Systematic errors induced by distortions in the pump pulse of conventional Brillouin distributed fiber sensors are thoroughly investigated. Experimental results, supported by a theoretical analysis, demonstrate that the two probe sidebands in standard Bril ...
