Nature creates hydrogels--soft, water-rich materials--with stiffness and toughness spanning over six orders of magnitude. These materials fulfill diverse biological functions tailored to mechanical demands. Inspired by this versatility, synthetic hydrogels ...

The difficulty of determining the slope of the famed logarithmic law in the mean velocity profile of wall-bounded turbulent flows, the inverse of the K & aacute;rm & aacute;n "constant" kappa, from direct numerical simulations (DNS) is discussed for channe ...

Existing theoretical analyses of Faraday waves in Hele-Shaw cells rely on the Darcy approximation and assume a parabolic flow profile in the narrow direction. However, Darcy's model is known to be inaccurate when convective or unsteady inertial effects are ...

We present a loosely coupled scheme for the numerical simulation of the cardiac electrofluid-structure interaction problem, whose solution is typically computationally intensive due to the need to suitably treat the coupling of the different submodels. Our ...

The two-dimensional (2D) delamination growth in composite laminates under the Mode-II fracture condition was experimentally investigated using a novel set-up. Circular plate specimens with a centrally embedded pre-crack of two sizes were semi-clamped along ...

This open access book allows the reader to grasp the main bulk of fluid flow problems at a brisk pace. Starting with the basic concepts of conservation laws developed using continuum mechanics, the incompressibility of a fluid is explained and modeled, lea ...

BACKGROUND For several years, orbitally shaken cylindrical bioreactors (OSRs) have become a new approach for propagation of mammalian cells cultivated under suspension. With new commercial cell culture media available today, allowing exceptionally high cel ...

The presence of aerodynamic vortices is widespread in nature. They can be found at small scales near the wing tip of flying insects or at bigger scale in the form of hurricanes, cyclones or even galaxies. They are identified as coherent regions of high vor ...

We propose here a method to experimentally quantify unsteady leading-edge flow separation on aerofoils with finite thickness. The methodology relies on the computation of a leading-edge suction parameter based on measured values of the partial circulation ...

Due to its high value of dielectric strength, oil is often used for transformer insulation. Nevertheless, its presence needs to be considered when determining thermal coordination of a converter system, which also includes the challenging modeling of fluid ...

We hypothesize that large eddies play a major role in the entrainment of aeolian particles. To test this, wind-tunnel experiments are carried out to measure the particle entrainment rate for various sizes and flow conditions. Wind-tunnel flows are usually ...

Predicting particle transport in turbulent flows has a plethora of applications, some of which are: the transport of atmospheric aerosols, the deposition of blood cells in the arteries of human bodies and the atomization of fuel droplets in combustion cham ...

The relevance of the phase-field approach to simulate the fracture in porous ceramics has been investigated. For this purpose, the conditions for the crack initiation using the phase-field model have been compared to the theoretical predictions of the coup ...

The transition process from laminar stratified shear layer to fully developed turbulence is usually captured using direct numerical simulations, in which the computational cost is extremely high and the numerical domain size is limited. In this work, we in ...

In the nanoscale regime, flow behaviors for liquids show qualitative deviations from bulk expectations. In this work, we reveal by molecular dynamics simulations that plug flow down to nanoscale induces molecular friction that leads to a new flow structure ...

This work presents a data-driven Reduced-Order Model (ROM) for parametric convective heat transfer problems in porous media. The intrusive Proper Orthogonal Decomposition aided Reduced-Basis (POD-RB) technique is employed to reduce the porous medium formul ...

While it is well known that constant rotation induces linear dispersive effects in various fluid models, we study here its effect on long time nonlinear dynamics in the inviscid setting. More precisely, we investigate stability in the 3d rotating Euler equ ...

In compressor design, a convenient way to save time is to scale an existing geometry to required specifications, rather than developing a new design. The approach works well when scaling compressors of similar size at high Reynolds numbers but becomes more ...

This thesis is devoted to the derivation of a posteriori error estimates for the numerical approximation of fluids flows separated by a free surface. Based on these estimates, error indicators are introduced and adaptive algorithms are proposed to solve th ...

It is well known that hydraulic machines experience various types of flow instabilities causing a negative influence on the system under off-design operations. The transfer matrix method correlating the flow properties in upstream and downstream of hydraul ...
