Information theory has allowed us to determine the fundamental limit of various communication and algorithmic problems, e.g., the channel coding problem, the compression problem, and the hypothesis testing problem. In this work, we revisit the assumptions ...

The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) AI learning-based image coding system is an ongoing joint standardization effort between International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and International Te ...

In 1948, Claude Shannon laid the foundations of information theory, which grew out of a study to find the ultimate limits of source compression, and of reliable communication. Since then, information theory has proved itself not only as a quest to find the ...

We summarize what we consider to be the two main limitations of the "Estimands for Recurrent Event Endpoints in the Presence of a Terminal Event" (Schmidli et al. 2022). First, the authors did not give detailed guidance on how to choose an appropriate esti ...

In certain cases of astronomical data analysis, the meaningful physical quantity to extract is the ratio R between two data sets. Examples include the lensing ratio, the interloper rate in spectroscopic redshift samples, and the decay rate of gravitational ...

Object-centric learning has gained significant attention over the last years as it can serve as a powerful tool to analyze complex scenes as a composition of simpler entities. Well-established tasks in computer vision, such as object detection or instance ...

With the emergence of social networks and improvements in the internet speed, the video data has become an ever-increasing portion of the global internet traffic. Besides the content, the quality of a video sequence is an important issue at the user end wh ...

The growing popularity of edge computing has fostered the development of diverse solutions to support Artificial Intelligence (AI) in energy-constrained devices. Nonetheless, comparatively few efforts have focused on the resiliency exhibited by AI workload ...

Satellite conjunctions involving "near misses" of space objects are becoming increasingly likely. One approach to risk analysis for them involves the computation of the collision probability, but this has been regarded as having some counterintuitive prope ...

Information is the resolution of uncertainty and manifests itself as patterns. Although complex, most observable phenomena are not random and instead are associated with deterministic, chaotic systems. The underlying patterns and symmetries expressed from ...

Nowadays, image and video are the data types that consume most of the resources of modern communication channels, both in fixed and wireless networks. Thus, it is vital to compress visual data as much as possible, while maintaining some target quality leve ...

We study the stability of low-density parity-check codes under blockwise or bitwise maximum a posteriori decoding, where transmission takes place over a binary-input memoryless output-symmetric channel. Our study stems from the consideration of constructin ...

Network information theory studies the communication of information in a network and considers its fundamental limits. Motivating from the extensive presence of the networks in the daily life, the thesis studies the fundamental limits of particular network ...

The management of existing civil infrastructure is challenging due to evolving functional requirements, aging and climate change. Civil infrastructure often has hidden reserve capacity because of conservative approaches used in design and during constructi ...

This thesis focuses on two kinds of statistical inference problems in signal processing and data science. The first problem is the estimation of a structured informative tensor from the observation of a noisy tensor in which it is buried. The structure com ...

In multiple testing problems where the components come from a mixture model of noise and true effect, we seek to first test for the existence of the non-zero components, and then identify the true alternatives under a fixed significance level

Algebraic network information theory is an emerging facet of network information theory, studying the achievable rates of random code ensembles that have algebraic structure, such as random linear codes. A distinguishing feature is that linear combinations ...

We consider discrete message passing (MP) decoding of low-density parity check (LDPC) codes based on information-optimal symmetric look-up table (LUT). A link between discrete message labels and the associated log-likelihood ratio values (defined in terms ...

In my thesis, I reveal several already-existing and emerging challenges in multi-objective management of multiprocessor systems, and address them through novel solutions, from heuristics to RL, depending on the complexity of the problem. Conventional multi ...

The rapid development of digital imaging and video has placed visual contents in the heart of our lives. Digital multimedia span a vast number of areas from business to leisure, including but not limited to education, medicine, accessibility, training, adv ...
