The development of new space missions with novel high-performance and very sensitive payloads for Earth observation or scientific missions has imposed considerably tougher requirements in terms of the satellite's pointing accuracy and stability, and thus o ...

This paper addresses the design and manufacturing of a crab-leg based MEMS relay for a high power application. Thanks to a contact resistance lower than 100 mΩ, the relay can hold a current in the order of magnitude of an Ampere without further thermal lim ...

Magnetically-levitated drives are compelling in applications where the long-lifetime operation or process chamber encapsulation is a requirement. To exploit these advantages, contactless position sensors are needed to estimate the position of the rotor. Of ...

This paper proposes a novel full passive magnetic levitation motor without active magnetic suspension. It has a magnetic levitation unit and a motor unit. The Halbach array permanent magnets and a pyrolytic graphite (PG) disk realize the full passive magne ...

Neurological disorders such as spinal cord lesion and stroke disturb sensorimotor pathways and result in severe motor deficits that can dreadfully impact the quality of life of affected individuals. Strategies aiming at restoring hand function after upper- ...

A Nb3Sn based, React&Wind flat cable, named RW2, was developed in the past three years at the Swiss Plasma Center in the scope of the EUROfusion conceptual studies for DEMO. The test results presented earlier proved an excellent DC performance, but large e ...

Neurological disorders such as spinal cord injury (SCI) massively reduce independence and quality of life. Most often, the majority of the nervous system is still fully or partially spared, but dysfunctional due to aberrant or absent descending input from ...

Foil bearings are strong candidates to support oil -free turbomachinery. Although foil bearings are a widely used technology, models describing their behavior are not validated using the film pressure, which is the fundamental variable of any fluid film be ...

Small-scale oil-free turbocompressors driven by high-speed electric motors and supported on refrigerant vapor bearings represent a promising technology to increase the performance of domestic heat pumps. Gas bearings enable high rotational speeds with low ...

Electric motors consume over half of the electrical energy produced by power stations, almost the three-quarters of the electrical consumption in industry and almost the half of commercial electrical consumption in developed countries. Motors are by far th ...
