The demonstration of flexibility technologies to enhance ancillary services of Hydropower Plants (HPPs) is showcased by the XFLEX HYDRO H2020 European Project. The potential of Full Size Frequency Converters (FSFC) is numerically and experimentally assesse ...

This work proposes a method for optimal planning (sizing and siting) energy storage systems (ESSs) in power distribution grids while considering the option of curtailing photo-voltaic (PV) generation. More specifically, for a given PV generation capacity t ...

According to the International Energy Agency, the global net-zero emissions objective requires the installed wind power capacity to increase 11-fold between 2020 and 2050. The scientific community has recently voiced concerns about the logistic feasibility ...

Facing the dilemma of mitigating carbon emissions and growing energy demand, this paper proposes a hierar-chical electricity-carbon trading mechanism for virtual federated prosumers (VFPs) in regional markets. At the inter-regional level, a trading platfor ...

The concept of a multi-source inverter (MSI) based on NPC topology was recently introduced for hybrid-electric powertrains to connect several dc sources to the traction load in a single conversion stage without magnetics. This work proposes a new modulatio ...

The foreseen important increase of the penetration of distributed renewable energies technologies into the electricity distribution grid is expected to lead to some major challenges. On the one hand, a large and synchronous production could lead in certain ...

We study a multiperiod optimal power flow (OPF) problem in unbalanced three-phase radial distribution networks with batteries. To address this problem, we first take the resistance-line battery model that treats lossy batteries by adding resistive lines an ...

This paper presents a method for the optimal siting and sizing of energy storage systems (ESSs) in active distribution networks (ADNs) to achieve their dispatchability. The problem formulation accounts for the uncertainty inherent to the stochastic nature ...

The planning of national power systems is traditionally based on long-term forecasts of electricity demand and fuel prices. However, over such long time horizons (20-50 years), these forecasts often prove to be inaccurate. As an example, wrong projections ...

This paper presents a new model of voltage source converter (VSC)-based battery energy storage systems (BESSs) that interface with power grids. A VSC-based BESS is made up of a series connection of a VSC, its connecting transformer and a BESS. The VSC allo ...

Lithium-ion batteries are widely implemented as energy storage devices due to their high energy density and low cost. They enabled modern portable electronics and electric ve-hicles, and are key to manage the integration of intermittent renewable electrici ...

In this paper, we propose a re-dispatch scheme for radial distribution grids hosting stochastic Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and controllable batteries. At each re-dispatch round, the proposed scheme computes a new dispatch plan that modifies and ex ...

Only 42 % of the mean annual production of large hydropower plants in the Swiss Alps is stored in their reservoirs. Once the reservoirs are full at the end of the summer semester, plants are operated as run-on-the-river in order to avoid spilling. A signif ...

In order to reap the benefits of Dielectric Elastomer Actuator (DEA) high energy density, the electronics powering the actuator should be as small as possible. Knowing that only a small fraction of the energy delivered to DEAs is effectively converted into ...

In real-time control of electric grids using multiple software agents, the control performance depends on (1) the proper functioning of the software agents, i.e., absence of software faults, and (2) the behavior of software agents in the presence of non-id ...

A paradigm change in energy system design tools, energy market, and energy policy is required to attain the target levels in renewable energy integration and in minimizing pollutant emissions in power generation. Integrating non-dispatchable renewable ener ...

The great challenge of massively integrating the volatile distributed power-generation into the power system is strongly related to the evolution of their operation and control. The literature of the last decade has suggested two models for such an evoluti ...

This paper analyzes the minimum energy capacity ratings that an energy-storage (ES) system should accomplish in order to achieve a defined constant power production in a photovoltaic (PV) power plant. ES is a key issue for the further integration of interm ...

Accumulators are inserted on the DC bus of a conventional elevator, to increase its efficiency and limit the power demand on the main feeding grid. In the process that enable the identification of the control of such a system, The Energetic Macroscopic Rep ...
